Bye bye Shirley

Recommended Posts

Just found Shirley, one of my ex-bats from last November, dead in the nest box. She was all curled up so I hope that means she went quietly in her sleep. When I saw her through the eggport Stan and Sylvie can in and gently nudged her, look at me as if to say 'somethings wrong' :( .

Funnily enough, I went out at 2am as I realised I hadn't put the key ring clip back on the catch on the broody house nest box (I'm worried a fox could scrabble at it and knock the catch loose, push the top up and get into Lily who is sat on eggs) and Stan and Sylvie were standing out n the run. I just said 'silly girls, go back to bed', but i guess it could have not long happened then.

Poor Shirley, she is the third of last Novembers 6 chooks to go, she never laid and always had watery poo and a mucky bottom a needed a regular was and trim (which she seemed to always enjoy).

On a brighter note - I realised the other day that Stan, the last of my previous group of ex-batts, has reached her TWO YEARS OF FREEDOM this month, I am so chuffed for her and she is still going strong (although hasn't laid since she moulted last year - which is fine)

Nicola.
