bruciebumpkin
One of our hens has been sneezing constantly for a while now. We have tried to do our research but everything came back saying that if there is nothing coming out of of her nose or clogging it up, then it is probably just a minor irritation. However, I am quite worried now because she is sneezing all day, every day. She isn't lethargic or showing any other signs of feeling under the weather and has in fact gone broody this morning, to add to it all! Has anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas?! Plum
I've got one doing it. She sounds a bit snuffly and sneezes a bit but her chest is clear and she's bright, no bubbles or discharge from nose or eyes, eating drinking and acting normally so I haven't taken to the vet for treatment. I bought some Citricidal which is said to be good for preventing secondary infections if they have a virus. She's not got worse so I assume it could have helped. Put them on Oregostim supplement now which boosts immunity and seems a bit of a cure all. I'm not worried about her but perhaps I should be. The nostrils are so tiny I don't think a vet could look up them
bruciebumpkin
Thanks, your experience sounds really similar. I have just bought some poultry spice as they have both just been through a moult and I thought it might give them a pick me up. I just was really concerned that there was some respiratory infection lurking about that was waiting to get worse. Thanks very much for the info
Plum
Other thing I do is put my ear on her back and listen to her breathing if it's rattly it could have gone to chest and I would see a vet. I can hear her nasal breathing as well which is upper respiratory and doesn't worry me.
bruciebumpkin
Thanks, will do that in a minute. Bet she'll like that!
Jools
Is is particuarly dusty at the moment - in the house or outside? That could make her sneezy. I have a bantam who has had a rattly chest for more than two years now !! She had two courses of antibiotics when it first started, which made no difference whatsoever. She's as bright and perky as ever, just a heavy breather and I stopped worrying out her long ago. Hope yours turns out to be just one of those things. PS It's easier to listen to them at bedtime if they're not happy about being handled normally.
bruciebumpkin
It was dusty before all the rain came, and we did consider that it might be aggravating her nose. I am hoping that it is just a phase that she is going through. Nevertheless, I will have a listen later to her chest when I can pick her off the nest after a bout of broodiness. p.s. thanks for the advice everyone - omlet forums always reduce worries!
