jennym
Yay! Pippa, our Miss Pepperpot, has finally laid an egg after showing so many signs. Her wattle and combs have been quite red for a couple of weeks, she's been crouching and eating more, and yesterday she tore the nest apart then sat on it 'practising' for about an hour . I was sure there would be an egg there yesterday but all's well today! It's paler than Lucy's, our , and it has loads of speckles, but the speckles are white!? Not what I was expecting but what do I know, these are our first hens Lucy's first had (dark) speckles too, and it was quite small, but she's now producing a fairly standard brown supermarket egg each day. I guess time will tell. Now it's all up to Belle to produce the goods

Sam
Well done Pippa One of ours started off with lots of white speckles, but after a while they went and now she lays clear brown eggs
beach chick
clever girls! their eggs do seem to change, I guess it is to do with their 'tackle' getting into gear and getting used to the egg-laying process - must be a bit of a surprise to start with. jennym
I went out this morning to open the eglu and I found a softie beside the glug. It was quite dim when I shut the door last night and I didn't see it. We have a chook cam that takes occasional pictures, so my sleuthing has revealed that it appeared between 18:53 and 19:01 last night, but I didn't catch whose bum was perched there at the key time! Now I'm confused, as I thought I had identified yesterday's new layer on the assumption that Belle looks a bit younger - her wattles and comb are more grey than red, and her legs haven't lightened up as much. Now I'm wondering, as both Richard and I thought the new egg had a purple-ish tinge to it. Maybe the new, morning egg was Belle and the evening softie was Pippa ?! Well, this is a great excuse to do a lot of chook-watching today
