beach chick
she was fine yesterday; this morning she is hunched, eyes closed, not moving much... the other 3 ex-batts are staying close to her which is sweet. I dont like the look of her tho and reckon vet on a Friday is better than emergency vet over the weekend.

beach chick
well, it was a bit inconclusive, but he's a good vet and I trust him (taken chooks to him before). basically it 'could' be egg peritonitis; but equally he thinks it could be her system reacting to the change in lifestyle from cage to freerange. so she has had a big shot of baytril, and I have some to give her twice a day for the next 5 days or so. he says either she will get better or just fade.... but if we are lucky we will have nipped it in the bud. he thinks unlikely to be anything infectious as he could find nothing obv wrong apart from her demeanour and did a good examination of her. she is in the tortoise cage inside the WIR so is comfortable, with the others but protected (and easy to get hold of for the baytril!!). when we got back she had a big drink of water; havent seen her eat today; but she's quite sleepy. she's not into anything other than layers pellets, but I might get some yoghurt later and make her a little mix and see if I can tempt her. so I guess my best bet is to keep her comfortable and see how she does; if she is going to fade then what will be will be. (the 'tortoise cage' by the way was how my SIL delivered my quail to me; it has been amazingly useful when pets are sick! it's about the size of a vet consult table, lid clips on and off, easy to move....) sandyhas3chucks
hmmm? like you say a tad inconclusive... is often the way with the girls though. Often the baytrill and some tlc and a rest and there's a turn around. (Sorry,,,, gosh here I go again) See how she goes then maybe consider sending off a sample to Retfords. Their poor immune systems are under pressure soon as they are released and easily pick up bugs that "normal" girls develop an immunity too. good luck. glad you took her... keep us posted
beach chick
she's not too bad at the moment. when I went to let them out at 8am I thought she was very poorly but I think she might still have been asleep or just dozing anyway, she's up and about, drinking and eating (layers pellets topped up with mealworms, mmmmmm) and has had her baytril, putting up rather more of a fight about than yesterday. am off out to the supermarket soon so will pick up some bran and some live yoghurt and give her some of that with a bit of poultry spice as a boost. Banus
Hi BC, Our Miss Pepperpot has exactly the same symptoms. Can I ask what Baytril is and where can it be obtained from? Our Miss was fine yesterday but right eye tightly closed today and the other doesn't look as round as it might. Although she is eating and pecking around. And finally what does WIR stand for as I'm usually good with these things but cant work this one out

beach chick
Baytril is a vet-only antibiotic. really all I can suggest is that you call round your local vets and find if anyone 'does' chickens and then make an appointment for monday if she is still poorly.... Gaga is fighting fit tonight, just given her her second dose of baytril and I reckon she can have her freedom again tomorrow.
