Meganymoo
Found loads of mites and the eggs in the eglu yesterday along with millions of earwigs! YUCK! Washed it all out and disinfected it though so should be ok! Anyone else experienced this? Edited July 25, 2011 by Guest

dixie chick
I am still itching after the disgusting clumps of red mites I found on the wooden roosting bars today! I took the bars outside and drenched them in mite spray but the blighters were still crawling all over the place.... drastic action was required !!! So I got the blow torch and scorched the bars all the way along - hopefully exterminating any living mites. For someone who normally loves all living creatures - I found it very satisfying ........ Plum
Murderer! Meganymoo sounds like you have a problem still. If I was you I would get some Johnsons mite killer and spray the girls as well as treating the house. If it's bad enough to stick to eggs then they are probably getting anaemic. Have you treated the house with anti mite stuff or just household disinfectant.
coco
I had mites [ luckily not red mite] in the chicks house this morning. After pulling house apart, poultry shelding it and loads of diatom I am still itching. Horrible things
dixie chick
Can someone explain the red mite life cycle? Do they stay on the chickens once hatching? Can they live on humans? I am still itching after my first encounter with them yesterday ... I am sure there is one in my hair - and I killed a tiny one on my arm (that was not red though - unlike the cluster on the wood) I am going to have another blast with the blow torch in a day or two, in case the eggs survived the inferno yesterday! The Dogmother
Have a look at this thread I've worked my way through various treatments over the years and settled on Total Mite Kill Concentrate to wash/spray it with and Buz Busters powder. Works a treat.
Snowy
They are tiny grey specks unless they have fed, then they become dark red and slightly bigger. They are attracted to the heat of a living body so will migrate to your hands when you reach into the chicken coop. They tend to hideaway in the daytime but come out at night to feed. You will catch them hitching a lift in the daytime though, looking for new 'victims' If you manage to destroy them all, you will need to spray again in 3 days to catch any that have hatched from eggs since the first blast. You really need something like Total Mite Kill or Poultry Shield which kills them on contact, rather than normal pet disinfectant.
