My son in Australia has a spoodle - spaniel and poodle. It seems to have the best of both so hopefully a labradoodle will. Actually, I think it is more to do with the training than the breed. Although having said that, I wouldn't leave my very obedient and calm spaniel alone with the hens. She's fine when I'm there but wouldn't want to risk it

We have 2. Henry was never bothered by the chickens and they would happily free range with him in the garden.

He was already a "grown up" when we got the chickens so he had to get used to them pretty quickly

We got Daisy at the age of 2 and she is totally obsessed by birds - clears the beach of seagulls, chases pigeons off the bird table etc etc. We have had to build the chooks the equivalent of fort knox to keep her out. She is incredibly jealous when they are fed or when one of us goes in the enclosure. Apart from that she is a lovely calm, playful, loyal and delightful dog.

Luck of the draw I think. They are a lovely breed. Have a look at the Labradoodle Trust website as there is a lot of good information on there. And most of them DO shed hair.

I have a Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle), she's great. I did have to train her not to eat the chickens  but she just sits and watches them intently if I let them out.

She's a great dog, she will walk as far as you want her to walk but will not be a looney if it can't be a long walk. She doesn't moult BUT she has the worst coat imaginable according to all of the groomers that we've ever been to. Luckily as she's such a lovely girl they usually don't mind doing her. She's also really good with the cats.

I should add that Cookie is a F1b so her dad was the first cross and mum was a poodle which probably accounts for the much tighter coat.

Good luck in whatever you choose. :D

I have Milo, a coming up 4 year old not so miniature miniature labradoodle. We introduced two kittens to him when he he was 7 months old - one is now his bestest buddy and just a couple of months ago we added the two chickens to our menagerie. Apart from when he gets a bit excited and decides to give chase when they are free ranging - he stops when told to but has no aggressive intent - just the fun of seeing them run and squawk I think - he gets on fine with them. He does the same with the cats and the next minute they are cuddling up with each other. It is down to training and socializing the dog with the chickens and other animals, making sure they are rewarded for calm behaviour around them.

If you are considering one please ensure it comes from health tested parents - you will find all the info for that on the Labradoodle Trust website. You could also join up with a local Doodle meet if you want to meet Doodles in the flesh and chat to other owners. The Doodle forums are the best place to find out about those.

thanks all. We wont be getting it just yet as the time is not quite right, but do intend getting one, just want to do my research properly first. I agree with the socialising, what you put in is what you get out.... i think this is certainly the breed for us...looking at getting an f1b or f2
