Uni essentials?

Recommended Posts

Find a smaller group of friends or even rent on a room by room basis, and wait until the end of the year, you'll be surprised at what's still on offer.

This goes for anyone looking for accommodation in any university town, as my OH took this advice for his final year, and is paying just over £40 a week and is moving in at the end of September.

Very risky if theres nothing left! :anxious:

We started looking in November for a house to move in in a few weeks - although we've had it over summer.

We were an 8 and found the last 8 bed house in Aber, paying £74 a week, which isn't too bad compared to some friends at other Uni's.

A friend in Aber hadn't found anywhere until a few weeks ago and really struggled to find anywhere, is on her own in a house of strangers now, not the best move IMO ;)

Please don't leave it til the end of the year to find accommodation for second year!! Often there will be no houses left/not the right number of rooms etc causing you all to split up and live with strangers on your own, which is never what you want at uni! In Aber, I started looking in November in my first year, and still had no where by the summer. I was placed in emergency accomodation for 30 days in halls, but was told that after that time I would need to have found somewhere. Luckilly we found a house two days before term started, but it's not in great condition! Certainly not one I'd choose to live in if there were any other options! As a result, my summer between the 1st year and 2nd year was a bit stressed to say the least, thinking I wouldnt have anywhere to go :) Aber is a very student town, but (as with every uni nowadays) there's more and mroe students looking for houses, and no more houses being made available for the increasing number of students. Sorry for the long post, I just don't wat other people to be as laid back about finding accomodation as I was, cos it nearly backfired on me.

On another note, another definite uni essential (well, essential for me at least!) is some nice shower gel/shampoo/conditioner. Once I got to uni it was the cheapest stuff I would buy, so for the first few weeks it was nice to have the really nice stuff :D

If budget is peoples' main concern, then looking at the end of the year for a room is their best bet.

Like I said, the houses for large groups go quickly, because people start looking ridiculously early and cause an accommodation rush.

If you want to live with 8 people. Look when you've only known them a couple of months and add to the rush.

If you just want to live somewhere that doesn't cost the earth and have an incredibly tight budget, look over summer, that way you avoid paying rent over the summer months and grab bargains.

There's nowt wrong with living with strangers - that's what happens when you go into halls, so what's wrong with doing it again in second year? You meet new people.
