Cinnamon
Now that we know whether our children are going to Uni or not (in a mere 4 weeks!), has anyone else started on the mammoth task of getting all the bits they need together? I have collated a few things...got a single duvet & pillow for £5 in Tesco last year,& some bright pretty bedding, plus some hot pink towels in the sale. Today I went to Aldi & they had frying pans, colander, corkscrews, utensils & can openers, all in a choice of 5 bright colours,& are very cheap indeed, which saves me a trip to Ikea I am going to get the John Lewis essentials crockery,as it is very cheap, very nice, plus we also get discount. So......................what else might we need?
Geoid
I found this rather detailed list on the Student Room website. Edited August 19, 2011 by Guest
sage
Cinnamon I work in a Uni and you would be surprised how many kids do the work on laptops and never back it up. Get your DD an external hard drive, if she will be going home a lot it may be better for her to leave it at home as hard drives do tend to be popular with the light fingers brigade. Bramble
I think a teddy or similar is crucial (especially on those first few nights away from Mum)

Cinnamon
Well,it does say that no one will need everything on it Its just a comprehensive list of what people have taken & might take,I think.
squiffs
I would say though if you can get a decent sized mini fridge for her, do, because her food will get pinched by her flatmates. And it will annoy her. And they will ignore permanent marker written on food saying who it belongs to

Not all unis have the same policies, and some of them will be okay if you get it PAT tested. Also: she can cover it with a tablecloth for inspections. bluekarin
I found this rather detailed list on the Student Room website. I think that's more than I have in my house! It's a good list - one to print off and cross out what you will not need. A lot of things you wouldn't have thought of or forgotten about. Lewis
We weren't allowed fridges in halls either - only some were supplied with them but for medication. We had a kitchen fairy who used to eat or food when he was drunk but no major food stealing. Although tis true, you can hide stuff for room inspections ... I had pet fish, Mabel the chicken came to stay for a while, we had a "flat" fish in the kitchen and a flatmate had a hamster I took far too much kitchen stuff and clothes - didn't use or wear half of them! If she's going to be home every weekend anyway she can always take a bit and then take more clothes with her after We went to Ikea a few times and got most things there. Obvious stationary - post its, hole punch, stapler etc. A couple desk tidies - I had one with 3 trays, a few of the upright A4 types and a few pots for pens, loose change etc. You could print her off a load of photos or a collage, my brother did a collage one for me + I had a wall full of photos I printed off A wall clock and an essential ... alarm clock! Does she have a digital camera? If you have an old one, a printer? I've had several mad dashes around campus at 5am after finishing some work and the 24hr printers all being broken! (Reminds me, I want to buy one this year! ) I couldn't be without my big wall planner from WHS to write dates for assignments, exams, Union events, when working/going home etc
squiffs
We got given like 5 different wall planners from the guild/various student bars/etc every year, so not necessarily something you NEED to buy, but yeah, very very useful.

Stupidly I hadn't really though of office ware...hole punches & so forth I am wondering how it is all going to fit into the car............... The coffee machine and fridge aren't so much being unsociable as 1) not having to spend out on milk every other day because no one else remembers to buy their own and 2) having caffeine at hand at 3am when you're knocking out an essay - nothing to do with their social lives, I would actually refer to them as 'essentials' for a student bedroom! Cinnamon
Ah well - I know my girl. If she could she would hole herself up in her room, playing computer games, making her own drinks, never coming out to mix with the others. At least this way she has to socialise,in some way. In a few months, when she has settled in,we can think again. And there is always Coffee Mate
