Just a quicky as i'm at work!

 

For those of you who have an Eglu Go with the plastic roosting rails - do you put anything on them to make it a little more comfortable for your chicks at night. Obviously you can't put anything too fine on them as it would drop straight through and meadow hay would stop the droppings falling through to the droppings tray underneath. So its a bit of a dilema as (i) they don't look to comfy to sit on all night but (ii) leaving them uncovered let the droppings fall through and its easier to keep clean.

They are fine on it as it is. If you put something on top, they will be sleeping in their poo. I line the bottom of the poo tray with bedding in the winter for some insulation though.

I think chickens naturally roost on tree branches, not solid ground, so I wouldn't worry about it. Mine could easily clamber into the nesting box (full of lovely soft straw) to sleep if they wanted to, but they choose to roost on the bars.

There is always one of mine in the nest box. Usually, the top hen.

I don't put anything on the roosting bars, their feet can wrap around them so they perch

 

Just checking, you said chicks - are they adults? Just that they shouldn't roost until 8ish weeks old
