Mercedes55
Went down to medicate the girls earlier for their Myco and our Welsummer, who had been doing very well and was totally fine all day has got worse She is making a weird noise and her right eye was totally closed. We did manage to get it open for her, but there is obviously something not right. She sounded like a baby crying when we were down there, but now she sounds more like a swarm of bees! I've just taken a short video, sorry it's not a very good one but you can more or less hear the sound and see the eye that is kind of half open. They finish their meds tomorrow and really don't know what to do. Had thought this was all going away and feel now like it's just going round in circles. sandyhas3chucks
I would phone my vet and see what he thinks, I have no experience of this.. good luck
Chucky Mama
I am not sure about the noise on the video as I can't hear an awful lot. She does look quite bright though Her eye might have glued itself shut during the night when some discharge dried out. I would continue as you are and bath her eye in a bit of cold tea (not milk!) and see how she seems at lunchtime. You may have to continue her antibiotics for a few days more. scarlettohara
I agree, bathe the eyes and ring the vet and see what they say.
Mercedes55
Well the odd thing was her eye had been fine all day, it just got like that in the evening. We do have some antibiotics left as of course our Favorelle didn't have much of her meds and being a big girl she was on a large dose of it. Will see how things are this morning, thanks for the advice
Chucky Mama
You know what it is like when you get up and have been unwell. Eyes can get dry and there can be 'stuff' that has accumulated overnight while you are still and needs to be coughed or sneezed up in the morning - sorry! . You may well find that now that she is up and about she will improve
Mercedes55
Well I have just been down there to clean them out and she seems okay today. Her eye is open and she isn't making that weird noise, so fingers crossed it was just a blip!

Mercedes55
Now this afternoon our Cream Legbar has started closing her eye and has a runny nose again, I did phone the vets and they said to keep medicating the ones that still have symptoms until the weekend and to take them back if they aren't right by then. We were giving them their meds earlier on and had done the ex batts and our Welsummer and were just about to catch the next girl when OH managed to knock the bottle of meds over. Why we sat it on top of the Cube I don't know. But now we have to go back and get some more
loumabel
Hi Mercedes55, can I ask what antibiotic your chooks are on. Mine have been on Baytril for the last two weeks and now the vet has swapped to ornicure and I am not sure it is doing any good, in fact I think they have gone backwards a bit. Just wanted to go back to the vet armed with an alternative option. Thanks Louise
Mercedes55
Hi Louise, our girls are on Marbocyl, I had never even heard of it before and even though I have googled it can't really find out much about it. However there is a month of egg withdrawal on this med, which could be why it isn't widely prescribed, but not sure. It's also quite expensive apparently, although obviously when your girls are sick the money issue often goes out the window. Hope your girls are better soon.
