sparkysmum
Sorry for taking up yet another thread, but we would love to know whether our Light Sussex chick is a boy or a girl. Here he/she is at six weeks: Any ideas? Fingers crossed. Alli X

Space Chick
Do you have a closer pic of the head and neck... Hard to tell from that picture.
Egluntyne
Based on my one and only experience of raising a Light Sussex Cockerel, the late Anton Du Beak, I'd say you have a girl there. Here is a picture of Anton at just over 7 weeks. There is a massive difference which I don't think the slight age difference would account for. Valkyrie
Well this is a piccy of my buff Sussex at around 11/12? weeks old: His neck feathers: And this is him around 16 weeks old with his sister - both hatched together but it was very difficult to see at first: Hope this helps - same birds just a different colour! Valkyrie
Fingers crossed it's a girl. But we weren't sure as both had rounded feathers - it wasn't until the boy took on a gold sheen across his back that we (OK - I was suspicious), DD desperately clung onto the idea he was a girl - and to be honest we didn't see much difference between the two of them. He started getting a beautiful green sheen to his tail feathers after his last moult - before they curved they were still upright like his sister. Her neck feathers were the same as his so we couldn't compare there. He was a lovely bird - very friendly. But the day before he crowed he took on our big fat queen bee orpie. I think she won, but he lost DD's affection somewhat as she saw the attack. The following day he crowed when I let them out and the next morning we dispatched him and had him for dinner (I have to say once he had gone I didn't have any worries plucking or gutting). I was quite upset at losing one of our chicks this way, but DD (being vegetarian) was very understanding and wasn't affected by his loss at all. So I really hope your's is a girl. Good luck.
