abwsco
Some pics of the work so far Fire goes in tomorrow afternoon once the hearth and tiles have set. Taking DD and her BF for her 20 week scan though so may not be there to see it go in.
The Dogmother
Looking good so far I had the chimney swept while I was at home for lunch; they checked and serviced to stove too, and had a good look at the stack through binoculars... all for £
abwsco
All done I need to take pics and we need to practice getting it lit and keeping it lit Didn't help tonight though as we were watching a film in the lounge so neglected it-lol

abwsco
OMG, the stench from it I know it will soon disappear but we've not had it on since this morning as DD's boyfriend is plastering the chimney breast tomorrow and he's coming round in a bit to put something on first. Oh, and I'm not posting another pic until that's been done-lol
The Dogmother
Yup, have some windows open while it ;proves'. If he's plastering the chimney breast then leave it a few days before you light it again or the plaster might crack. I have mine roaring away now; it has been a mild day (T shirt weather) but it's nippy now with no heating on. I am burning the remnants of a beech tree that the outlaws too down a couple of years back.
Mrs Potts
Hi, I've been following your thread since you started. How is it going with the woodburner? We have a gas fire in the chimney breast so would be looking at a set up like yours, even though there's a lot of work to do in getting it finished properly. Your experiences to date have been really useful to see (even though they might not have been useful from your point of view, sorry ). Thank you. abwsco
We're loving it Mrs Potts First proper enjoying of it wasn't until Friday afternoon just gone though. Whole room turned out to be an absolute mare to do with walls needing two coats of emulsion, woodwork needed four and it wasn't even dark colours we were covering. Oh, and we had to replace some floorboards so they don't match but at least we found the leaking central heating pipe we had. Not the best of pics but here goes. Also, think it would look nicer with the inside of the chimney breast pale so the woodburner would stand out more but we know it would end up covered in dirty fingerprints and ash
The Dogmother
You have my floorboards! Stove looks lovely, I agree that the inside of the chimney breast would look better a bit lighter - can you expose the bricks in the recess? Thank you The bricks were dreadful We may yet end up painting the recess or at least the sides but in daylight it looks much better and not as much of a black hole. chickencam
We just left the rough plastered surface on the inside of the recess and then painted the wall a dark colour. Yours looks lovely to me
Olly
Mine is painted dark grey - it doesn't really get dirty, or at least it doesn't show! That looks really lovely - worth all the hard work.
abwsco
Thanks Liz and Olly It's burning away as I type, lovely and warm
Mrs Potts
That looks beautiful, well done and I am glad you are enjoying it. I can see what you mean about a pale inner wall, but it still looks lovely. I didn't even know that you have to burn them off, so this was useful too. I have just looked at our walls (dimpled) and know that our floorboards currently under carpet don't match (gas pipe fitting)so I think ours would be a nightmare too although I do have your lovely photos to show OH, which is always a good thing. Times like this a magic wand would be useful. Mrs Potts

DH was driven mad by the paler new floorboards so on Friday night he mixed varnish and another woodstain together, put it on the new floorboards and you can hardly see the difference now. Can take another pic if you want to see. Just let me know. Oh, and we normally do them all with a big sander that we hire so they come up "cleaner" but my DD's boyfriend and DH did these with belt sanders to save money. Can also post a picture of floorboards done with the big machine if you want. We love our sanded floorboards and now only have carpet on the stairs and landing. The Dogmother
We love our sanded floorboards and now only have carpet on the stairs and landing. Me too, it makes the floors cooler but I just wear extra socks. Just come in from the cold and have the stove roaring away with two tired dogs comatose in front of it..... bliss
