Hen Fan
One of our hens has just laid a really strange egg. It is on the largish side and looks like the shell is really thick and wrinkled. Does anyone know why this is? I've taken a photo of it but don't know how to add it to my post.
Snowy
It can be quite common for them to start laying deformed shells as they get older. The contents are usually fine, but crack it into a jug first just to be sure
Hen Fan
It looks pretty gross. The hens are less than a year which I didn't think was very old. We've had some odd eggs in that one of them laid loads of double yolkers when she first started laying. Also, out of the 3 hens one has never laid. Do you think that she ever will? Snowy
Even in young hens, some just never lay 'good' eggs, while some occasionally lay odd ones. It is more common as they get older or just before they stop laying to have a moult (most likely at this time of year). They should improve when she comes back into lay again. If you are having persistent problems with all of them, worth worming them with flubenvet as worms can also cause egg problems (generally pale yolks and thin shells though). It is very rare for a hen to never lay, but not unheard of.
Hen Fan
Thanks Snowy. 2 perfectly normal eggs this morning. Might try worming because it does seem odd that one hen has never laid at all.
