New WIR being delivered. Moving advice needed, Pics added

Recommended Posts

I am having a big move around this Saturday when our new WIR is being delivered and installed by Aviaries 4U. I am very excited but also worried. The reason behind the move, as some of you may know from my previous posts is that we had an outbreak of Mycoplasma about 6 weeks ago when I moved my new ex batts into the run next door to my Bantams. The Mycoplasma was triggered in my Bantams due to stress (think they were already carriers)and after some great advice given to me on this forum I ordered a new WIR so that I can seperate the two groups by some distance. My Bantams are much improved and are not showing any signs of being poorly at the moment and have finished all treatment but i am worried that the stress of moving may trigget a relapse. Any ideas on how to minimise stress would be much appreciated. I have lost two chooks in the last week, to unknown causes (not Myco) and really really don't want to lose any more.

Good news that the bantams are looking better after their treatment. :D I'm not surprised that you are concerned about them getting stressed again, you've been through a lot with them. I think that they will be fine - it seems to me that the most stressful thing for any hen is introductions with new ones, and moving to a new run will be nothing to them in comparison. I think they should feel quite happy about the new WIR as they will all be moving intogether.

I don't remember mine showing anything other than curiosity and joy at the extra space and ladders to play on! They also went off on holiday (boarding at Malvern) and just carried on as if they lived there for years! Maybe a few extra of their favourite treats on moving in day :D If they are friendly hens that enjoy your company, bring a chair and sit in the run with them for the first hour - I have been siting in the run with my new girls, reading the paper with a cup of tea! (this was to tame them - are now jumping all over me). No idea what the neighbours think though :D:D

Good luck, i'm sure they will all be very happy in their new WIR - lucky hens :D

Thanks Sandychick :D , you have put my mind at rest. I guess you are right that as long as they are all together they will be fine. I have had a long run of bad luck with my chooks and find myself fretting about them a lot!! :anxious: I think I will try the cup of tea in the run sitting on a deckchair  it made me laugh out loud reading your post, we are all totally mad with our chickens!!!! :D:D

well, they are all moved in and all seems to be fine  They seem to like their new WIR and I let them freerange for a couple of hours this afternoon and they all took themselves back in without coxing with treats so I am taking that as a good sign. I have put tonic in their water and am watching them all very carefully for any signs of stress but so far so good. I will add some pics tomorrow if I can remember how to do it, but I am thrilled with the WIR and would happily recommend Aviaries 4U to anyone. Thanks again for your help :D

PS. I put a chair in the run and had a cuppa today, great tip!!! The chooks loved it and so did I :D

It looks really great  . Can the PP fly over the wooden fence :?:

Very good question!! They havent yet and they are just bantams so they don't really fly much and when they do they don't fly very high. I only let them free range when I am in the garden so even if they do get over the fence it shouldnt be too much of a big deal as long as the dogs don't get too excited!!
