auntielizzie
Bessie hasn't laid any eggs this week. She normally lays a medium sized light brown egg. On Sunday she laid a very very white egg and she hasn't laid any since She seems fine in herself, eating, drinking etc, although I have noticed her sitting quite a lot - in the run mainly - and I have also noticed that she sits in the nest box at times. A couple of times I have come home from work and found her sitting in the nest box, sitting on one of Betty's eggs. I don't know if Betty has just laid these eggs, but they have been warm when I have removed them. So, I'm wondering, does this mean she is broody oe has she stopped laying because of the shorter days Why did she lay a white egg I did wonder about worms, but I last wormed them in mid-July. Would it be safe to worm them now anyway just in case? Any advice or ideas would be very much appreciated Edited September 28, 2011 by Guest
AlisonH
Sounds like she could be broody - if so knock it on the head fast! Not sure about the white egg but my chooks eggs are noticeably smaller this week and I'm wondering if it's the dark and cooler temperatures. coco
Sounds like she might be broody. Have you checked her for lice, mine had them in the summer and although thery were all well in themselves it did affect laying.
jennym
Sounds like a broody. My girl laid a very pale egg for her first egg when she came back into lay after a broody spell this summer. Maybe it's just some sort of adjustment in the laying tackle as it starts up/closes down in a broody? Just a guess, I've no idea really
daxigirl
She could be thinking about moulting? Pebbles started like yours and now she's resembling a BHWT chook with a bald head and a bum with a lone tail feather sticking up like a banner. (Hilarious as she still thinks she's the best looking chick in the coop.)

(Hilarious as she still thinks she's the best looking chick in the coop.) Well done daxigirl - you were right I started to notice feathers appearing in the run on Monday; yesterday there were more and today - feathers all over the blinking place Every time she moves, more feathers I pick her up - more feathers This will be her first moult. How long should it last When is she likely to start laying again Should I be giving her any supplements, special diet or anything during and after the moult So many questions I know, but I have to say I'm soooo impressed at how clever you Omlet people are This chicken keeping is so interesting Luckily Betty is still laying, but I suppose I have to expect her to do the same at some point
Plum
Looks a bit like a pillow fight doesn't it. I give mine Lifeguard tonic while moulting and noticed the better feather colour. Some people advice giving extra protien in the form of tuna or cat food but I rarely remember.
Melbourne12
It'll probably last 4 to 6 weeks. We use Orego-Stim in their water, but any tonic will be fine. It takes a lot of energy to regrow their feathers, so don't expect any eggs for a while!
