ali-s
Some of my raised beds have now been emptied and I have spent today getting rid of the weeds that decided to grow there. Some of the beds will be empty now until next year and I have read that sowing a green manure helps with the fertility of the soil and helps keep down weeds. Are green manures as simple as they sound? sow the seeds in the Autumn and then dig it all in, in the Spring never to be seen again. We have spent the last three years getting the veg garden in shape and still have a long way to go. The area was totally overgrown when we first moved here with 6 foot high Thistles, Nettles, Docks and Brambles. The last thing we want is another invader in the shape of the green manure appearing in the beds. Any thoughts, opinions on green manures will be gratefully received. Thank you. Christian
As long as you cut it down and dig it in before it sets seed, you should be fine. I have used this for a couple of years and it works well.
ali-s
Thanks Christian I received the November issue of Home Farmer today and there is an article in it about green manures. Several ideas including cardboard, Winter Tares and shop bought dried Chickpeas. I have a few empty beds and a large area not yet in use, so I feel an experiment coming on with some of the ideas from the article.

ali-s
I covered three of the raised beds yesterday with cardboard and put used grow bag compost on top to weigh the cardboard down. I hope to sow Chickpeas in another two beds this week.
