quickcluck
Think we are doing alittle chook shopping tomorrow I say 3, DH says 4 Going Black Rock, Light Sussex, and 2 others, there are no exchequer Leghorns at the moment We live in a normal semi cottage, surrounded on all sides, we've never had any noise problems the neighbours are great and our chook sitters should we go away!! Is it too many for a hobby keeper???
chuckmum6
It really depends on the size plot you have, 20 will foul the ground if your space is limited and remember the extra cleaning.
surfer_chicken
If you've got the room and the time for them then you might as well go for
hilda-and-evadne
there are no exchequer Leghorns at the moment I would happily make you a gift of my exchequer Leghorn because she really needs to be in a larger flock. I didn't know, before I bought her (from Wernlas), that Leghorns tend to be aggressive towards non-Leghorns, and she has always bullied the other, more docile hens. Probably not what you envisaged, as she is already three years old, but is in fantastically good condition and being one of the breeds that takes rest from laying for four months a year she may go on laying for a good bit longer. HH HENS
Hi I have or had 20 chickens as I lost my first one on Wednesday, my lovely lavender Arucana. I started off with four two years ago and I am now at 19. Yes it is more work, but I love the fact that I can have a variety of breeds. I keep them in two large walk in runs, with access to a good sized grass area with electric poultry netting. I am really careful with my cleaning routine ie I pooh pick the grass and runs and sprinkle the runs with stanofan S. I also worm three times a year with flubenvet. memphisto
I'm having a similar dilemma here. I've got 7 in 2 coops, a 3rd coop came today which frees up one of the other coops smaller coops now the big girls are in the big coop. Earlier in the week, OH divided up the gardens properly, so we now have 2 gardens properly divided up now, the new girls are in the new coop and have been FR with the big girls for a few hours each day and there's been no fighting at all, Dilys is playing mother hen to them, the others leave them be, so no 'proper' fights yet, but then they only spend 2-3 hours with them before going back to their garden. Now, the lady I get my hens from has offered me 2 chocolate orpington bantams, how can I say no, well I've said I'll take them anyway. We live in a row of three house, large garden, no other neighbours, so I think I'm OK, I just think the neighbours think I'm mental! As long as you have the space, the time and your neighbours are as good as you know they are, I don't see too much of a problem

coco
I have 24 in tow seperate runs. I have 8 big girls in the WIR along with the bigger banties and three pekins. In the smaller house and run I 8 small banties. I have neighbours on three sides. There is a fair amount of cleaning and I put bio dry in the runs every couple of weeks. If you have the space I would go for it.
memphisto
I was out til gone 7pm the other night cleaning up the garden (poo duty!) and have just come back in now after getting the coop ready for tomorrow but, if it is something you enjoy, it's not so bad, so I would also say, yet again, go for it!
