jenkey
Pansy our light sussex came out of the hen house this morning with one eye totally shut - her comb was a bit droopy and she was a bit wobbly and unsure as if not seeing out of one eye really affected her. We took to her to the vet who is really good with chickens, however it was a locum today who seemed very unsure of chickens. She listened to her chest and heart, checked her over, opened up the eye and said it was infected, probably from an injury. She gave her Baytril but said it doesn't often work on eyes so she still may die. Pansy is top chicken so I'm surprised that she could have been pecked by another of our girls. I am also really concerned that it is something else that could be infectious to the other birds. The vet says it cannot be anything other than an eye injury as only one eye is affected. What do you think? We've left her in with the others tonight on the vets advice but am feeling really unsure now.
staceychristie
May she have scratched it, or received it by accident? Ours seem to keep getting bushes flick up at them as they maraud trough the hedge like tanks. We've used Brolene from Boots, and her eye cleared up in a day. I'd call the 'proper' vet in the morning and just seek a bit of extra advice. Good luck Stacey X
jenkey
Thanks Stacey, her eye is still closed and puffy but not worse than yesterday and all of the other girls look as healthy as ever. She could have been scratched as she does spend hours rootling round at the end of the garden in the brambles. I guess we'll have to wait and see how she goes. loumabel
when my chickens had mycoplasma one of them had an eye that was swollen and completely closed. It did not affect both eyes on that chicken. I would go back to your vet and try and see a vet with more experience of chickens. I would also keep her seperately for now until you get a proper diagnosis. Good luck
PeckyBeak
Opticlox is a eye ointment that is absolutely brill. You squirt it into the eye and it is an antibiotic, to be used every other day, often one dose is sufficient. Needs to be prescribed by a vet, Has worked a treat for my chooks when needed.
