Sammiboo Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 Went Christmas shopping yesterday and stopped by our local garden centre in Welshpool. Charlie's. On the way out we looked in the foody section and OH said look their eggs are cheaper than ours!! We sell ours for £1.00 half doz and these were 85p I picked up the box and it said eggs from cage birds I was really shocked for a garden centre to be selling those! I was really tempted to kick up a fuss especially as its a chain! I don't know whether to write or go in armed with information for the manager who probably won't give a toss anyway! jackian Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 What about..a few printed flyers just by the egg boxes explaining about caged chickens I live in a village and my local shop keeper was buying eggs from a local farm thinking they were FR .He assumed as it was local they would be FR.The writing was on the side of the box in small letters. KateC Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 I wonder if someone could clarify exactly what "caged birds" means. I have four hybrid hens who stay in a 8 square metre run. I can't let them free range because we have two very excitable dogs and plenty of foxes in the area. I make sure they have things to keep them entertained with dustbath and perches. Are these classed as caged birds. I understand that to be properly free ranging they should have a minimum of 4 square metres each but my girls are clearly not battery hens so I am a bit confused. I don't sell my eggs as free range, in fact I only sell them and give them to family and friends who are completely aware of their living arrangements. jackian Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 KateC I don't think you need to worry.My chicks have the same sort of life as yours and FR as much as poss. As I see it (and I might be wrong) Caged birds are ones where they don't see daylight , live in a space no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper their food comes down a tube and water to make them "perform" extra light is added to make them lay. Caged birds don't purr and coo and from what I have read on here when people adopt battery hens they don't know the meaning of treats.Thery have to be trained to eat them. KateC Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 Thanks Jackian, you have made me feel much happier. I would love to be able to let them free range but just can't take the risk. We saw a fox come back and take our neighbour's chickens in a few trips and although my husband tried to get to them before the fox, it killed them all. However cages are soo much nicer..... KateC dont worry, my girls are in the run most of the time unless they FR supervised.
