Tonics

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be a good idea to have recommendations for tonics for chickens.

Just say the product, and why you use it, how often, what its supposed to do, does it work as it should etc

Apple Cider Vinegar; an all round tonic, I think its mainly for the digestive system. I put a splash of it the chickens water about half the time. It does stink though if you get it on your hands!

Battles Poultry Drink: I'm using it at the moment as some of the girls are moulting. I just put a very small amount in their drinking water :)

I have a whole lot of faith in Battles Poultry Drink! Possibly because it's the only shop bought tonic mine will drink!

(I noticed Battles have changed the bottle a little, making it easier to pour. A helpful change that was long overdue.)

Chooks have refused to even attempt water with the posh protein tonic I bought, or the heavily rosemary scented 'natural' tonic I thought we'd try out (can't blame them, the smell was a bit intense).

I've never tried apple cider vinegar, I shall give it a go...and wear rubber gloves whilst putting it in the water :D

Mine have a splash of cider vinegar a couple of times a month and the pink poulty tonic roughly for a week once a month. Then when it is really cold or if any of them have moulted they they have a dash of cod liver oil with poulty spice mixed in to their pellets.

It will be interesting to see what others use.

LifeGuard - all round tonic with antioxidants and vitamins. Its meant to give them a boost and help gut problems too.

Mostly give it when under stress - broody, moult, introductions, ill, after worming - but can also use it more often. I think its great and the chickens seem to love it diluted in a rabbit water bottle! :D
