Effects of a fright?

Recommended Posts

We have two chickens and last weekend (7th Jan) in the strong wind the roof blew off the chicken's run (it's quite big) and one of the chickens has not been the same since. I think she might have been in the run at the time it blew off.

She hasn't laid since (she was regularly laying every day) and was very sleepy and quiet for a few days after. We brought her inside to warm up over night but she had appeared to be on the mend. I went to check on them this morning and noticed that there are loads of her feathers all over the run, maybe about 50 (they appear to be from all over as she doesn't have any bald spots). I haven't seen her or the other chicken plucking them out, they seem to just be falling out as she's walking round. She is eating, drinking and pooing normally I think.

Is the loss of feathers due to a delayed reaction to the stress. I'm not too concerned about her not laying as we are now experiencing a cold snap which I thought might slow her down.

The other chicken has also not laid for the past couple of days but seems to be fine otherwise.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Two of my chickens were inside my chicken house when a tree fell in the high winds and squashed the house - thankfully they are ok and have continued to lay as normal.

It sounds as if your girl is starting to moult as it would coincide with no egg laying, this could just be a total coincidence with the high winds as my girls are generally pretty quiet and miserable when they start moulting and chickens don't seem to have any sense about not losing feathers when its freezing cold.

I expect plenty of others on the forum will give you advice and hopefully put your mind at rest.
