I think I'm finally on the move at last!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find my last post about this but finally just before Christmas we got a cash buyer offer for our house after having it on the market for five months. The flat we had found we went back to have a look at and were completely disenchanted with it this time - whereas in the summer we had loved it - so immediate doom and gloom because we really didn't want to go down the renting route. Anyway between Christmas and new year we found another flat which is perfect for us - and that has vacant possession - I know everything could fall through still but everyone seems really enthusiastic and the people buying have already got the surveyor round to our house last week and we only accepted their offer in the New Year.

Anyway as I said before I was in a dilemma because it isn't really suitable to have my five chickens in the garden there (maybe a couple of bantams will be fine in the future). Anyway I spoke to my friend before Christmas who has call ducks and will be living around the corner from me and she said that she was thinking of getting some chickens in the New Year and I immediately said - you don't want five chickens and a free wooden house with all mod-cons do you and she said yes! She came round last Friday and and I think she was alarmed at the amount and size of the poo that five chickens produce compared to little call ducks but I think she may have them. She doesnt think my wooden house would be easy to dismantle and has a spare duck/chicken house that just needs a new door on it. So I have given her my old classic eglu for the meantime and she has taken that away to work out how to put the run together - I always forget! The problem is do you think a classic eglu would be big enough in the meantime for a large australorp, a barnebar, a marans bantam, a plymouth rock bantam and a pekin? It's not a question of the run because she has a massive garden and they will free-range but is the actual eglu too small for my birds? If she could have them it would be great because I could visit them.

If they have easy access to food and water and plenty of space it might be ok as I have found that my lot like to huddle up. I have an 2 eglus and a cube and often find that I have 16 in the cube on some nights! The only two who don't go in are the bantams. I have a poland and a sablepoot. The sablepoot is very fiesty and looks after the two of them. The other combination that sometimes happens is 2 bantams and 3 exbatts in one eglu, 1 exbatt in the other eglu and the rest in the cube. There seems to be little logic when it comes to roosting in fact they seem to be more like Emperor penguins!

Sophie - Congratulations on selling your house! Send some of those "selling" vibes to us please!

I think two large hens, and three small ones should be alright in a classic Eglu. What does everyone else think :?:

If your pal decides against homing your chucks, remember we will take them. The hens are going to have acres behind the Mother of all electric fences. We have gone ahead and purchased anyway

Awwwww thank's Wolfie that's really sweet and I may very well take you up on the offer if she has second thoughts! It's a nightmare selling a house isn't it! I had a lot of interest but the same story - the other people had to sell their houses first! Then the week before Christmas I relaxed about keeping the house in showhome condition because I thought no-one's going to be looking at this time of year but lo and behold these people viewed on the Saturday (so I madly cleaned the house like no tomorrow) before Christmas and then I had about 10 minutes notice that they wanted to view on the Monday and then it was negotiating! Refused their offer before Christmas but then found this really lovely flat and thought a cash-buyer was too precious to lose. So fingers crossed!!!! I really hope you sell your house very soon! Packing 15 year's worth of stuff is hair-raising!!!!

Anybody else have opinions about my five girls in an eglu for a while??

At one point all 12 of my chooks slept in one eglu  They had a choice of Eglu's but all preferred to sleep together. It's taken a while, but now they divide themselves in the other 'Lu's ... unless I'm late home and my son has to put them to bed and then it's back to 12 in 1 :wall:

Yours will be fine (seeing as they can free range in a large area and are not restricted to the Eglu run).
