Why, when they have two full Glugs of fresh water, do my girls insist on picking all the bits of ice off their run cover for a drink?

 

Oh yes, I forgot - because they're chickens .

Absolutley!!! You've just reminded me of something one of my old favourite brood girls would do in the summer actually....I always make the dogs "slushies" when it's hot, half ice cubes and half water?? Charm would fish the ice cubes out of the bowl with her paw and chase them around the kitchen like ping pong balls! She'd end up really hot and worked up from all the exertion, then go to the water bowl to find it empty 'cause she'd knocked it over fishing said ice-cubes out Talk about defeating the object eh?? I always forgave though as she was so entertaining Bless Her...gawd I miss that dog

My bowls of nice clean water, often with additional healthy tonics, aways get snubbed in favour of muddy puddles.

 

I swear one particular hen would only drink water that was filtered through my potted bay tree and dripped out the bottom of the pot.
