Is to too cold for her to be out at night alone?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We only have two chickens left after losing two this year.

One of them (Freckle) did something unbelievably idiotic this morning (even for a chicken) and stuck her head through the chicken wire in their run and obviously got it stuck, and in her efforts to get it back managed to rip her comb off at the base of her head! There was blood everywhere and the vet has given her a couple of stitches. She is fine now and sat next to me eating some seeds!!

She has to stay in overnight which means that our other chicken, a little black bantam (Hatsy), is going to be outside all alone. She will be in their wooden house, but it's quite large so I don't think her body heat alone would keep it even a little bit warm and I'm worried that she may get too cold out on her own. However she really dislikes being picked up/being indoors. She gets very anxious indoors and looks like she's on the verge of a panic attack!

I was wondering whether anyone had any opinions about whether she'd be all right on her own? If i bring her indoors I'll make sure that she is near Freckle so that may relax her slightly.

Thanks!!

Kate

I was worrying about her, so I have brought her inside. She's in the box with Freckle and apart from making pathetic noises seems to be okay! She was quite freaked out to start with but now I've popped a lid on the box so it is a bit darker she seems much happier..

Freckle seems fine also! Probably a feels bit hard done by as I'm worrying about Hatsy more then her!

I've left my other chicken out on her own in a rather large pen. The nesting boxes usually sleep 2 of them but I've added some extra straw and made sure there is no drafty areas. They've survived worse winters. Check her feet and under her wings, if they're warm...usually very warm, she will be ok. You can check her in the night too just in case she gets cold. I'm sure she will be fine though.
