Sam
Hello One of my chickens looks like shes losing feathers from her neck and I'm just wondering what the cause is, she looks very scruffy! My chickens have a glug and grub, don't have lice, and were POL Nov. 2011. Thanks for any help
AndreaT
This happened to one of my girls, slightly older than yours, she looked like a naked neck at one point! After some research I put it down to her moulting as her comb has gone pale and she stopped laying at the same time. She hasn't really lost many from anywhere else but generally looks scruffy. Mum
My first thought was "moult". But, in the main, chooks do not go into full moult until they enter their 2nd year; if your chook was POL in November, that does not meet the expectations. Having said that, it is possible for them to have a mini-moult (I know this because I posted about it in the past few months ). This *could* be what is happening to your chook. Personally, I would keep an eye on her to a) make a judgement call on the mini-moult; b) to check she isn't being hen pecked c) to ensure, if she is being hen pecked, that there are no open injuries; d) to ensure she is eating/drinking ok. Keep us updated as to how she is doing.
Sam
Thank you for both your comments, hopefully it is just a mini moult and nothing else. She seems fine in herself (apart from not being a big fan of the snow!) and I'm pretty sure shes not being pecked, I was watching them eat earlier and it was her pecking the others to get the food Thanks again, hopefully I'll be able to post a photo of her when he she actually looks white!! This is what she USED TO look like!!
Cheeky Chooky
She's lovely! I'm sure she'll return to her full gorgeousness in the fullness of time
AlisonH
Is she an Amber star because mine looks exactly the same at the moment and so does my Bluebelle - they have lost from the base of their tummy and at the neck. I wondered if it was boredom pecking at the moment because they are not out in the garden because of the snow -they won't budge. Let me know please! Griffin
I'd say it's what I call a neck moult. It is like a mini moult, and most moults occur in the winter. Silly girls.
Egluntyne
Looks like a big standard mini moult to me. Nothing to worry about.
