Fenton Rose hens

Recommended Posts

I knew it was a mistake to look on Google to see if anywhere near to me had hens for sale - I have stumbled across the Fenton Rose, which lays blue or green eggs.

They look very pretty,& if I am going to boost the flock I do need to do it now,so does anyone have any knowledge of these hens?

Recently in the Midlands an Araucana hybrid has sprung up, Cotswold Chickens have them and so do Bell Plantation in Towcester so I dare say they are available from other suppliers, they are guaranteed (I think) to lay a green or blue egg, the other hybrids I think only have a 70-80% chance.

I have one (looooooong story....) and she lays an amazing colour egg, mine is very docile and friendly - ANH has one too.

The flightiness will probably be down to the araucana in them - all of the araucanas I've had have been mad as a bag of frogs but great layers.

Any reputable outlet with blue egg laying hybrids will make sure that the hens are laying blue eggs before selling them; I know that Jude at Cotswold Chickens does when she has them in stock, but I understand that stocks of these are limited at the moment. Lewis bought one - a black and ginger hen with a top-knot

I think the recent Araucana hybrids are being sold by one hatchery, I haven't seen them anywhere else, they are very different to the Fenton Rose (which is a bit more like a Cream legbar' in build)they are more Araucana in shape and very similar in looks,I reckon these will be more robust than the classic hybrids

I also have one from Cotswold Chickens :D She has laid since we got her in December. At first I thought her eggs were more blueish, now I think they are slightly more greenish - possibly that is due to my eyes though

She is a fab little girl, always on the go and she looks so funny when it rains, her top knot makes her looks like a crazy punk rocker!
