Limping Bluebelle

Recommended Posts

It sounds like she has sprained it or something similar. One of my girls got her leg trapped between roosting bars this week and hurt herself so badly she couldn't walk or eat or drink - she toppled over every time. I picked her up and felt down the leg for a break. I couldn't feel one, but rather fortunately I had a vet on hand and he couldn't feel one either so I'm kind of reassured that they are easy to spot. On that basis he recommended leaving her be for an hour or so to see if she righted herself. After a couple of hours she was no better and sitting down a lot so he gave her an anti-inflammatory shot in the breast. I had to hand feed her that day and carry her to bed but she stayed outside all the daytime. The next day she was a new chicken :D

So, for you I'd monitor her just in case she gets better, and make sure she is eating/drinking. I'd double check for bumblefoot (particularly if she is a large bird). If there is no improvement I would take her to the vet; I expect she will get better with tlc, but for me the jab was like a miracle with the bird getting pain relief and no loss of condition as she didn't need to build up her strength.

My bluebelle did this once, and I couldn't find out why. She was able to get around for food and drink, but was thoroughly fed up looking. I Did the same, checked her leg, felt nothing, and just kept a special eye on her for a couple of days, and after two of three days she was fine. As long as she can get around I would wait and see how she is in a few days before letting yourself get worried (though I know that's not easy)

Its worth bearing in mind that limping in a chicken can be a sign of serious kidney disease. My lovely Barnavelder had this symptom last year. I assumed it was a strain of some kind, but she got worse, not better. I took her to the Vet, who explained that there is a nerve (I think it is a nerve) that runs from the leg, close to the kidney. Therefore, if the kidney is inflamed, it presses on the nerve and causes the limp. There was nothing to be done for Charlotte except have her PTS. She was a lovely girl :(

Just watching this post, as one of my girls got her leg shut in the underneath of our front door this afternoon. The girls all like piling up on the front door mat....daughter shut door and didn't realise she shut a chicken in it too. I am unimpressed!!!!!!! I gave Cluck (the chicken) an arnica pillule and popped her back in the wir (so to give her leg a rest from free ranging) along with her friends. She had a tiny graze....if it hasn't healed by tomorrow...has anyone use sudacream on a chicken leg...the only hesitation I have is if they peck it and eat it.
