dance in the dark
Basically, as it says in the title. I am looking to get some buff girls this spring, and I have seen some people advertising day or week old sexed irpington chicks, but I have also heard they can't normally be sexed so young. Any information you have would make me super happy!
Griffin
I've hatched a fair few Orps, and some are easier to sex than others. Boys generally feather up really really slowly, they're all legs, bald patches and big bones for weeks. Girls are neater and less aggressive, the boys do enjoy a good s"Ooops, word censored!" with each other. But then there was a blue Orp that even when it went to it's new home I wasn't sure what it was, and it was about six months old! I think I even posted a photo on here and the general opinion was that it was a girl. Thankfully the home it went to didn't mind either way and I didn't charge for it It turned into a boy eventually I certainly wouldn't feel confident to accurately sex them as very young chicks, but by four weeks I've usually got it right. Daphne
Personally I'd be very suspicious of day old sexing of orps and would steer well clear unless it was a very well known breeder - in general they are very difficult to sex at an early age. AJuff
I have three buff orps which hatched last Sunday. I think all three are girls according to the wing feather sexing. Two rows of feathers at the end of the wing, different lengths = girl, same length = boy. Early days so will wait and see . . . .time will tell. Purplemaniacs
This sexing of chicks is all new to me, I keep looking at my chicks and wondering Someone looked at the wings when the first few hatched and made a decision but we will see if they are right or not AJuff I hope you are right and have three girls. Redwing
I'm hopeless at sexing Orps, they can be five months old and I am none the wiser! Its easier if there is a big batch as comparisions are easier, I'd expect a good breeder or Orps to have a good idea by 6 weeks The wing feather sexing only works where a fast feathering strain/breed of bird is crossed with a slow feathering one I'm not 100% sure of the science though!
