Taking the plunge and getting new chickens

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have not been on the site much since loosing all my chooks to Mr Fox over a year ago.

We have been working on the garden getting it ready for when the time came that I felt ready to get some more.

We now have a lovely big area and we are just deciding on how to enclose it. We have fencing on 3 sides and a dense hedge with mesh fencing growing in the middle so it is just really the front that we need to sort,we thought about having aviary panels and a gate with mesh sunk underneath and paving slabs either side of the panels(if that makes sense)and then aviary mesh covering the top of the area to make it a little harder if the fox was to come over the top of the fence.our coop is on order from Solway recycling and would be big enough for 4-6 hens.

do you think this set up sounds ok? we were new chicken owners the first time round and although we have learnt a lot since then I want to get it right to avoid as much as possible the same thing happening.

any advice or pics on run set ups would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Alli

Hi there..glad to hear you are considering getting new girls again.

Please excuse me if I have misunderstood your post but are you intending to let your girls free range all day unsupervised? If you have a known fox problem, personally I wouldn't without electrifying my boundaries...The last fox we spotted in our garden made his escape by jumping up at least 8 feet on to the top of our garden shed.....and then over the back into the next garden.... Sadly fences are no barrier....
