Mobile phone theft scam

Recommended Posts

I've just been passed this by a police officer friend....

There has been a sharp increase in the theft of top-end mobile phones locally, they thieves use 'cheap Santa Pod tickets' as a distraction and move around tables in local bars engaging people whilst stealing their mobiles from the table/their bags or pockets.

The thieves in our area have been reported as two eastern european males in their 20s, both wearing puffy jackets and woolly hats so they couldn't be identified on the CCTV. I understand that they are charming and find it easy to distract people.

Please be very careful when out and about; there is a growing market in stolen iphones and other top-end mobiles.

This happened to DD about a couple of years ago. We were in a cafe and she had her phone on the table. A young lad who was of eastern european appearance approached with a card, on it was writing in a language we couldn't understand. He kept talking and showing the card. It was only when he left that DD noticed her phone had gone too :( He had lowered the card on to the table and had taken the phone away under the card. It was a good phone her dad had passed on to her. We immediately cancelled it which meant it was no use to anyone. It was amazing how we could both be duped. The cafe owners called the police but nothing came of it. I often look at people with their phones on tables and think how vulnerable they are to thieves.

Don't be fooled, they are easily unblocked. And aside from that the thieves selling them only hardly give a warranty with them  but then the people buying dodgy phones deserve what they get anyway.

Well I am just about to be tracked (I think by my employer) when I get a new i phone. Am reading this from another angle that I might be up to be scammed! I am happy with my simple Nokia phone. I cannot see the difference with texting and emails.Sorry!
