vida
Hi, I need some advice. One week ago one of my Pekin Bantams laid an egg and then suddenly became paralysed - well, not completely paralysed she lost the use of her legs, but when i picked her up she would move her legs. Her neck was fine but she didnt have much appetite. We even left her on her own in the green house over night, but no improvement and she had lost the ability to cluck. We had to put her to sleep. Exactly a week later, my other Pekin Bantam went into the hatch to lay an egg, came out...and i found her on the pen floor unable to move. Exactly the same thing. However in a strange way she can move her neck near enough in a 360 degree. She seems to still be able to cluck unlike the first one and so far has her appetite. Any advice or help is appreciated as i have never seen this before. They both were completely healthy and laying eggs regularly with no sign of any illnesses. Thank you Vida
mollyripkim
No advice I am afraid but really sorry to hear that. I lost my first chicken the day she laid her first egg, she stressed all day going in and out of the nest box and was very agiitated and then died overnight. Never did know why but was told they do just die sometimes but as you have two with same problem I am not sure. Are they both from the same place? Perhaps you could ring them for advice but I think I would also take her to the vet. Hope she is ok.
vida
Hi, Thank you for your reply... We bought them as eggs - hatched in my living room under a broody hen! She looks really healthy other than her legs! Who knows...
Sandychick
I had a hen with Marek's disease earlier this year. I hope that isn't what she has, but it does sound possible. Mine started with just a slight limp and then became lame over the next few days. She seemed otherwise completely healthy for a couple of weeks, but then became ill and was PTS I think it would be a good idea to take her to the vets and see what they think. Hopefully it is something else, but if it is Marek's it is a horrible disease and there is no cure. It is young birds that usually show symptoms. Mine had just started laying and was 8 months old. Redwing
It could be Mareks. affected birds usually start suffering with it when they hit a period of stress so coming in to lay is sadly a prime time for it to hit Pekins arent particularly known for it though so it would be worth seeing what a vet has to say
vida
Thanks again. This morning she is the same, and she has not been able to poo at all. She eats though. Will take her to see the vet.

vida
Hi again, Took her to see the vet, gave her an injection and said she will be fine. that was yesterday, no sign of any improvement today. The strange thing is that she can turn her head 360 degree. The vet said she has a flexible neck but I think it is related to the paralysed legs. Any how will keep you informed of any changes. Tweety
That's very strange. Did the vet give you a diagnosis? Is he/she used to dealing with poultry? I hope she improves.
vida
Well, he said sometimes when they lay eggs they put pressure on themselves and this happens.!!!!!!!!!
Lewis
Did you speak to a specialist poultry vet? I'd be tempted to give The Chicken Vet a ring or an email to see what they say and get a second opinion.
