Eggasperated
After all the trauma of returning my chickens to the breeder on Friday woke up today to find one of the exchange ones starting to show the same symptoms. Separated her into dog cage indoors. Rang my local vet but the chicken guy away . Spoke to breeder who recommended Tylan injection for all three girls. Rang vet back - not licensed for Tylan injectable - double - gave me number of farm vets. Got appointment for 2.50pm today (luckily not a bank holiday here). Trauma catching other two girls, one caught her comb which started to bleed, now a bad case of purple spray all over the conservatory floor . Finally transported girls to vets. Absolutely wonderful, gave all girls thorough exam, Tylan injection for all + anti-inflammatory for ill girl, half hour consult really patient with a panicky me - all for £27. Hope we're all through the worst now, but getting a chicken vet as good as that has been real find .
loumabel
I have just read your post and my heart just sank I really really don't want to upset or annoy you in any way but I would return these poorly birds again before you become attached and find a different breeder. I am speaking from experience as I bought six bantams last year from a bad breeder (didnt know it at the time) and they were ill from the beginning like your girls. I have spent a fortune at the vets and I have just had my third girl in this flock put to sleep today and I am heartbroken . It seems to me that if they start out unwell and sickly you are fighting a losing battle from the beginning and it then becomes a very costly and upsetting experience for all involved. I really hope you don't mind me sharing my experience with you, It is honestly meant and with a genuine concern that you don't suffer the upset that I have done. If you do decide to keep your girls I hope they improve quickly and have no more problems. Wishing you lots of luck and best wishes. x
Eggasperated
You haven't upset or annoyed me Loumabel, I'm interested to hear your comments. However, I don't think that I got my chickens from a bad breeder as I know others on the forum have been very happy with their chickens from there (including ANH). I think he and I have just been very unlucky. I know he is treating the original girls I took back and is insisting I have my money back for these girls. The vet was very hopeful that these three will be ok, especially as we have caught it really early this time. I appreciate your concern and do have concerns for my original girls but they have their own house in a separate area and I'm trying to do my best for all of them. This is being quite a steep learning curve for me and I welcome thoughts and comments from everyone, and I will keep updating on the hens progress. loumabel
That is good news that your new girls seem to be improving and it does seem that the breeder is trying his best to put things right which is more than mine did!!! sorry for the rambling yesterday, I think I was a bit fired up as i had just had my Blossom PTS and my anger for the breeder bubbled to the surface again! Wishing you the best of luck and fingers crossed your girls are on the mend
