Sour crop - what to feed

Recommended Posts

Poor marmite had been looking off for a couple of days, yesterday I managed to get hold of her (no mean feat!) and found her crop felt impacted, managed to get this on the move with some olive oil and a massage, but when I checked her this morning she had the tell tale spongy crop. With the help of my other half we tipped her upside down and massaged her crop, not sure I've ever seen anything like what came out before, OH may be permenantly traumatised! We have since given her water with some acv in and some live yoghurt. My question really is what else should I offer her to eat? Not sure if I should soak her pellets (not that she really likes them) should I get her some live maggots incase there's a blockage? ( and where on earth do you get them from?) also, of her crop is full again in the morning how often should I empty it? will prob take her to the vets tomorrow but to be honest their chicken knowledge is not good, and I've failed to find one locally with any expertise.

On a positive note, hector the dog said the crop contents were lovely to roll in! Grrrrrr!

Marmite and toast how is your hen now?

My lovely hen Mighty White appears to have sour crop - started yesterday when I noticed she was off her food then I picked her up and mucky water poured our of her beak. Last night I took her to the vet who massaged the crop and got half a jug of mucky liquid out. This morning there was more fluid in her crop so I gently massaged and it came out. (I was advised by the vet NOT to hold the hen upside down as some websites recommend as the hen risks aspirating). So far this afternoon she seems a lot better, she is drinking water and taking pro-biotic yogurt. I've also got anti-fungals from the vet which may help. I plan on checking her crop every 5-6 hours and gently massaging. Last check I couldn't feel much there. She's got water, pellets and yogurt which she's taking. I'm planning on nursing her this way over the weekend and fingers crossed she will make a full recovery. She's certainly looking better already. I'd be interested to hear how your hen is now to to know from other people how long their hens have taken to recover from this?

The vet (first time I've ever taken a hen to the vet) suggested surgery but I really, really do not want (or plan) on putting a hen through that.

Sadly Mighty White hen passed away this morning. At first thing she looked perky and was beginning to scratch around outside so I thought things were on the up. I brought her inside (no struggle she was always very easy to handle) but within seconds she had what appeared to be a small fit and died in my arms. It seemed to happen very very quickly which I suppose is good as I wouldn't want to see her continuing to suffer. We are very sad but glad of the wonderful free life she had. RIP. (white chicken)
