Is it cruel to not let my chickens out of their run?

Recommended Posts

I don't want it to sound like I'm going to do animal cruelty I just want to know because in previous experiences we've had our garden wrecked by them! But I want to keep some chickens again, but in their coop and run!

The measurements are:

215x100x700cm 70cm NOT 700!!!

Will this be big enough for 4 large fowl chickens?

The house is raised above the run about half the size of the run, with nesting area and perches!

Sorry for all the questions but I want to do it all properly this time! :):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I am a passionate Gardner, and show mine each year.

BUT.... The first year I had my girlies and didnt have any garden left

We now have a compromise, mine have a WIR which is 12ft x6ft plus another 10x4 enclosed garden extension for them.

It's full of perches etc, obviously no plants, grass or anything green!!

They now spend all there time in there are very happy, and this year I was awarded Silver Gilt by my local Judges and was asked to enter London in bloom and got Highly Commended.

Was extremely happy with that so to you question, sorry for waffling, I think your Hens will be fine and you can enjoy having a garden as well.

After my lovely stripey lawn was completely decimated in 2 months I had my original 3 girls in an eglu classic run with an extension (so roughly 1x3) for 2 months while we were making the permanent fenced area that they live in now. They were totally fine in there but I personally would have liked at least double that. The more space you have the less likely you are to have aggression or disease problems.

Is the 700cm measurement floor space or height? If it's floor space I would think they'd be perfectly happy but if the floor space is 215x100 I'd think you'd need to get only 2 hens which isn't ideal or a larger run.

You really shouldn't worry about asking too many questions though, it's part of the fun!

Hi Will,

Going by this description I'm wondering if you mean 70 cms instead of 700? I suspect what you have is a 2.15m (length) x 1m (width) by 0.70m (height) house + run, in which case you have just over 2 square metres and I'd personally put no more than 2 large fowl in there. If you really do have a run that's 7 metres long then that's a lovely large space for 4 L.F!

Best of luck getting your new coop & hens!

Jen
