superkitty
Hi all...I'm worming the girls at the moment, using the marriages pre-dosed flubenvet pellets. They've been in their WIR the whole time, with just water, grit and the pellets available. For various reasons (work, and am hand rearing a family of baby blue tits at the moment ) I haven't spent as much time as I normally would watching the girls - have just been checking their food and water and for eggs each day. I noticed that there had only been a couple of eggs this week (they're on day 7 of the worming today) and also that Augusta seemed to be sitting down more than usual. Yesterday when I cleaned the eglu I noticed there was a softie (our first!) laid under the bars. She has perked up today and is jumping around on her perches and dust bathing...so I assume everything is ok now (it looked like a whole shell, no bits stuck in her). They go back to their normal food tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see what happens. My question is whether anyone else has encountered this when worming? She has happily laid nearly every day for months, with the occasional little break...and the lack of eggs and then the softie coincided exactly with me starting to worm them. Am just curious really, as to whether it's a coincidence or not. what do you think?
superkitty
Oh well, guess no-one has experienced it but me. Interesting though - will have to watch and see what happens next time I worm them
JS1
I'm on day four of worming at the moment and there's no let-up in egg production, and no softies that I've seen - my welsumer's egg was a bit smaller than usual yesterday, but that was probably coincidence. It presumably does affect their insides a bit, mind you, as it's powerful stuff! There's not a chance that your hens are broody, or upset by the hot weather? Chucky Mama
Worming can upset the balance a little and cause softies, it should return to normal or improved egg production when you have finished
