Hello everyone

 

Im not sure what else to try. My last ex battery hen who lives with one friend is just not quite right.  She is probably at least 3 or maybe 3 and a half. She hasn't laid for a few months but doesn't appear to be moulting. I took her to the vet a few months ago and she couldn't find anything wrong but she's quiet and slow.

 

I have examined her myself on friday and no signs of lice or mites. Her crop was empty and as it was a hot day I syringed water into her beak.

I took her to the vet for a check up. The vet couldn't find anything wrong in particular but gave her a vitamin injection and gave me some Beryl's bacteria powder. I've given her this and been observing her all weekend. She has been eating a little and drinking. 

 

My question is, is there anything else I can try to perk her up, or is this just her winding down?

 

I do have some Avipro. Should i mix that to a paste and give her that if she doesn't improve?

It may just be old-age but have you wormed her with flubenvet recently? If not, I would, and also maybe give her some nutridrops. I hope she perks up.

Thanks Egghead, they were wormed in February but I mixed up some more pellets with Flubenvet wormer this morning. I have got some poultry nutri drops as well so I can try that too.

Could be anything, they suffer from as many diseases as we do and unless there is something obvious you are stuck really if the vet can't spot it unless you want a load of expensive blood tests and investigations.

 

Hope she picks up with the supplements.

That's kind of what I thought. The vets don't really seem to know much but I'd rather still take them to satisfy myself I've tried!

 

I'm guessing that cos she's over 3 it's probably due to age and a hard life.

You can get poo or throat swab samples analysed at Retfords for around £30 if that's any use.

The hot weather may be making her a bit listless. However, three is a very good age for an ex batt, and there is a limit to what you can realistically do to keep them going. I'm sure you are right, she has reached the stage where she is winding down.

She seems a little brighter today. Tucked into a few bites of a giant tomato. Anyway, she doesnt appear to be in any pain or discomfort, and the vet didnt highlight anything like that. So i guess we will carry on as we are and take each day as it comes! She still likes corn so I give them a little bit every evening as I know she likes to eat that.

Thanks Egghead. I cant wait until next week when I am on half term and then they can both spend a week in the garden with me. I can really watch her then and make sure she is eating and drinking regularly and not just in the evening when the corn arrives! Being at work all day is a pain!

 

Just edited to say that she is much improved at the moment. Maybe that Beryl's bacteria helped!
