Luvachicken
After 2 of my lovely girls have gone over the last month or so, Hubby said "you'll have to get some more" I jumped at the chance at saying "can I get 3 more?" to which he agreed I thought if I got 3 more then maybe things would be a bit more friendly in that it might be more 2 against 3 rather that 3 against 1 as thats what seemed to happen last time. Whether that was because 3 were speckly and one was dark brown I don't know, but Poppy definitely got left out or chased away. So the question is, what shall I get ? I like the smaller chickens really, but don't want anything with fluffy feet or anything black. What would be the best to go with my 2 remaining Wyandottes ? They are just over a year old. Luvachicken
Do silkies have fluffy feet ?
LottyJ1
Not sure - can anyone else help?
Redwing
Silkies have fluffy legs and a little fluff on their feet but not much
mollyripkim
Yes silkies do have fluffy feet but in varying degrees. My red girl looks so comical as she has loads of feathers, then a couple of the gold ones have hardly any. I don't find it a problem though. Benaberry
My Darcy, a buff orpington bantam, is a real character - a highly entertaining combination of the orpington friendliness my full-size girls have with pure bantam cheek that gives her a very distinct personality! The silkies I had last year prior to Mr Fox's visit were adorable, very sweet little souls. A friend has got a white silkie and says the same thing. She's also got a young Barbu D'Anvers, who is very, very friendly and tame indeed.
Luvachicken
I'm really confused. I don't know what to get at all I love those millefleur types but don't know where to start. I don't want anything too noisy. (moaning) Myrtle and Melody make enough noise already. Where do I get chickens from round here ? I did look at the Widgets in Reading but they didn't seem to have what I wanted. But now I don't know what I want. And I don't really know what to look for. When I bought chickens last time the breeder looked them all over and knew what she was looking for. If I went by myself would I be looking for right sort of things. I really wanted to get some during half term ........
Chortle Chook
How about getting a Fresian fowl? I saw some this week and they have nice clean legs, are not big but not diddy either, are gentle souls, and have lovely big round eyes. The ones I saw had such pretty feathers too. I'm not sure of the name of the colouring but I think they were buff laced Anyway Widgets just may have some in a while as these ones were having babies destined, I think, for Widgets. You could give Rachel who owns Widgets a call and ask her. Another alternative might be a Poland?? Again clean legs, very pretty colouring (especially the chamois), gentle and easily tamed, but not low maintenance as you have to make sure they don't go to bed on rainy days with wet 'wiggs'. You could try Hamble Valley and get one Poland and one Silkie from them. Again, I'd give a phone call before you go. Another place that does a variety of breeds not too far away from you is Acorn Nursery. If you were to go there you would certainly see lots of different types (and seeing the real thing is so much better than books). Not all the grown up chooks would be for sale as some are his breeding chickens but if you want a 'child' from one of these you could ask him and 'place an order'. They have a very nice little tea room to help you with your thinking Wherever you try at this time of year, if you want POL (which would be easiest to go with your current Wyandottes) then you might need to wait a month or two and get them in the summer holidays, rather than at half term. If you go to Widgets or Acorn I could probably meet up with you (work allowing) to help you with your decisions . . . but I might be a wicked influence. HH HENS
I have a breeding trio of Friesian fowl here at home. I have collected my first lot of eggs which went into the incubator yesterday so I am very excited to see if they will be fertile. I have hatched two other lines in the past three weeks one batch came from the isle of mann and the other from Gobbetts rare breed farm in Shropshire, as he has been breeding Friesians for years. My original girls came from the Wernlas collection and my Cockeral from Gobbetts. They really are smashing little girls such inquisitive natures and gentle, they are really good layers laying a good sized pure white egg, they even laid throughout the winter and dont tend to go broody. As you can tell I am a big fan.
Luvachicken
Thank you Chubby Chook for offering to come chicken shopping with me. That was very kind of you. I'm hoping to go to a breeder this week with my hubby but if I don't get anything I'll PM you to sort out a shopping day. HH HENS thank you too. I hope your breeding program goes well.
