How to tell who has laid what?

Recommended Posts

I was advised that the colour of the girls ear flaps are a clue as to which egg belongs to which hen but my girls all have more or less the same shade of earflaps!

The eggs range from cream to brown and I know the brown is from Marge who is a Colombian Blacktail but how can I tell who is still laying without hanging round the WIR all day please?! (hatch)

Many thanks :D

I think you have to catch them at it, and then learn! My Bluebelle lays quite large, pale eggs; the Speckledy (when she lays - she's pretty much given up now) lays small, freckled brown eggs.

The Daisybelle's eggs are much smoother and shinier than the other hens, they are quite distinctive.

Until I had chickens, it would never have occurred to me that individual eggs could look so different and that you could tell which hen had laid which one - it's miraculous really!

Yes that is what I do. Stalk them of a morning and watch who is going in and take the eggs out quickly. If you are lucky you may even watch them lay :D

One of my wyandotte bantam lays cream eggs the other pale brown, orp bantam nearly white and pekin pale brown, hybrids white and brown. I've also learnt to recognise them by shape as well. :D

Can a chicken be taken off guard - say a POL or a just laying and the egg just pop out where they are standing. I am finding eggs in funny places and was fishing one out of the run with a stick yesterday. Must be a fright when it just drops out

Marigold, Lavendar, Chilli, Bluebell, Pepper

Easy - Make sure you get girls that lay different colours

The three hybrids eggs are very similar, but when you see them side by side it is quite easy to tell them apart. But of course we did have to catch them in the act in the first place.

Thanks all ! :D

I am off next week so if the rain stops for long enough, I shall do some lurking and see if I can catch them at it. I have also purchased some binoculars so I can identify the announcer of the latest egg and rush down the garden to claim the next one!

There are far worse ways of spending your time off :D:D

Although it maybe difficult to explaim to your colleagues when you go back to work
