Listless hen - sitting in run this am - fine yesterday . Has had a humoungous moult recently and we think she might have laid 2 days ago - as one girl is old and lays softies and the others are young and lay little eggs. Got her out - bum clean no mites - new feathers coming. gave her water and some mealworms. Kept her out for an hour and put her back - She is now up and about. I suspect its the lull before the storm. Shes not broody, but I fear Peritonitus. Any ideas chaps please.

Just lost one of my chooks to peritonitis. She started to waddle like a penguin and her tummy was hot and quite hard.Check her tummy , could she be egg bound or due to lay a softie? Hope she's better soon x

Shes not waddling and tummy not hot. I lost one hen a year back to cancer which I couldnt have diagnosed. Maggie is so lovely and likes a cuddle. thanks for replying. I always fear the worst.

I know how you feel.

My post regarding Phyllis she was like that and I was worried and you have seen the pictures she really doesn't look well in them.

I had recently changed their food so I have put her back on the orginal food they were on also I have been giving her nutribol and adding oyster shell to the feed as she had a problem with laying soft eggs a few weeks ago and I think the change in food and the soft egg laying has really made her feel under the weather.

 

It might be that your girl is going through the same thing she might be trying to lay a soft egg which makes them very uncomfortable or she could be egg bound.

You could try to give her a warm bath which I did with Phyllis and that did perk her up a little also if she is laying soft eggs I was given some advice that if you add cod liver oil to their feed it helps them to absorb calcium which I have also been doing and since my post regarding Phyllis just wanting to sleep she is nearly back to normal she is very lively and back to giving the girls orders the only thing is she has not laid an egg yet but i'm not to worried about that as she has not been a regular layer.

 

I was also told that you can send a poo sample to retford poultry and they will check to see if she has any infections. If she doesn't get any better it might be worth giving them a try. I haven't used them myself as of yet but I have there website saved in my favorites just in case.

Thanks might try that - shes ok so far this am and is running about with the others. I was giving extra calcium before for my elderly girl. I know many maintain they should get from feed. I have a huge age range - 2 youngsters - just laying, an old girl whose retired (i think) and Maggie whos probably 2 ( got her POl last August2011) . Slightly puzzled as we got 2 normal sized eggs at weekend but she has had an enormous moult. But might give CLO a go.

Might be just the moult. Presumably you are giving her extra protein (e.g. Scrambled egg or tuna) and a tonic and have done a general health check.

 

If it's peritonitis her abdomen will feel squishy with fluid.
