clucker1
Of Victoria one of our first chickens from Omlet. She was nearly 2 and a half, but she died suddenly. Was fine yesterday morning and in the afternoon. Closed the girls up at dusk last night @2150, got them up this morning to find Victoria hadn't gone to bed but was under the cube dead (I hadn't seen her underneath the night before as it was dark.) Do chickens have heart attacks or similar. A good way to go I suppose, ie quickly....she hadn't laid for about a week or so.
Olly
I'm sorry to hear it. Yes, chickens do have heart attacks - it's not uncommon for them to die suddenly, and although it's a shock I always think it's preferable to an illness with stress for both you and the hen. That was not a bad age for a hybrid hen, and a peaceful ending.
Purplemaniacs
Sorry to hear about Victoria, our Omlet chickens did not have a very long life, the other two hybrids we got from someone else at the same time lived for much longer and one is still going and laying a few eggs. I think the Omlet girls wear themselves out laying all those lovely eggs. Chickens can hide illness so we do not realise that they are ill until it is too late. Alis girls
Sorry to hear that - I have one Omlet lady left - she stopped laying for 9 months - the odd softie which she ate and now shes laying daily - big normal eggs. Why I dont know. i suspect she'll "empty out" and peg it. I was happy for her to retire. But mother nature took over. I love having the extra egg but dont want to lose her. Your first hens are like your first cat, dog whatever. Hugs Ali x
clucker1
Thank you everyone for your comments. Yes, losing your first chicken is very sad. Thank you Olly too for your pearls of wisdom, yes it was far better for her to go so quickly, far better than a more lengthy affair. Its strange how attached you become to them, even though they are chickens, its not like they spend time indoors with you like cats and dogs....well my chickens don't, but I am sure there are some who do! Anyway, brought some roses in from the garden today as a little memorial to the lovely Victoria.
williamspencer98
My prudence died suddenly too. It was very sad, I think mine was from a heart attack or some sort of breathing problem. Next doors dog chased them cover the past few days which we think caused it. She only lasted 3 hours before leaving us I feel guilty, but that's what she needed to do and I'm sure she's in a good place and that's what I have to think! I went out and bought two more hens today. Although prudence will never be forgotten, i hope my new girls will heal me, family and the other hens! Welcome home Aggie and Trudi. Best wishes Will
clucker1
Hi Will Sorry to hear about prudence. I am glad she didn't suffer long and is probably clucking around in the clouds now.
