Training puppy -mouthing/biting

Recommended Posts

My dog lead thread ended up going more onto training but thought I should start a more specific one :?

OH and I are not sure what to do about Lara mouthing/biting. He says as she does not bite but rather mouth we maybe should not tell her off. I on the other hand am not sure if this could develop into more biting than mouthing. I have been saying 'ouch' if she touches my hands or feet with her teeth no matter how light it is. She will usually then lick instead for a second then tries to grab my hand/foot again. This mainly happens when she is excited. What do folks advise?

We went through this with Tanner!

I think some of it is play fighting when they are tiny - they chase anything and ankles were a favourite. A firm no eventually worked and a swift removal to his crate if he didn't. He is now 8 months old and has a mouth full of teeth - both baby and adult - some of them double rowed as he has both come through at once! So he it chewing his toys like mad and biting again, but at times they are obviously sore and he feels with them more than bites!

They do grow out of it but you must set limits! Give them plenty of chew toys to help with the teething pain!

I would like some help with this too. Neela is biting all of us. I think she might get better if hubby stops playing with her with his hands  , but she gets in a mega hyper mood a few times a day and really goes for any flesh she can - feet, face, hidden under clothing

I know it is due to teething so I am giving her carrots from the fridge and ice cubes which she loves. She has a raw hide bone, one end already chewed off in a week, plus other chew toys. I am trying the sharp NO! and then ignore and if she continues, moving her out of the room so she is alone. She's not impressed, but I hope she will learn soon. I started to feel quite despondent about this part of puppy ownership, but it seems from looking on the web it is common and can be sorted.

That must be an OH thing, mine darts his hands along the floor and she pounces like a cat. I feel as if I am saying 'no' and 'ouch' a lot. When she runs after me pulling at my trousers I do the 'tree' and she does stop at the time but hasn't seemed to learn to stop fully yet.

Are they teething yet? I thought that was a bit later? However I could be wrong and maybe I should try cool things with her too. Another thing to help is supposed to be socialisation with other dogs. Thankfully on Friday I will be able to take her to the puppy playgroup at the vets. It is run by the nurse and she says she doesn't allow bullying :? Maybe some of the other pups will show her the error of her ways  She is really a determined lady (Lara that is) and I know I will have to be more so

Good advice from the last two there. Ruby wanted to bite or chew things when she was teething. I used to give her frozen carrots or chilled toys to chew on. When she started on me I'd give a mock squeal look away as if I were hurt and then give her a toy to distract her with lots of praise.

In general it's best not to play games with them which encourage them to pounce on you, chase hands or maul in any way as this is conflicting with your training. It soon passes though :D
