Looney
Omleteers! Advice please! I have been thinking about getting a handheld cleaner but am bamboozled by the range available, varied reviews and prices! It would need to suck up bits from laminate floors in the kitchen and living room (I have a 4 year old and 18 month old so plenty of crumbs and bits daily!) and from sofas. Would also use it for the stairs and perhaps the car. Anyone have one that they would recommend?
merlina
I love my Dyson digital! (DC35) I had the old 'ordinary' dyson handheld and wasn't especially impressed. I've tried about a zillion 'dustbuster' types and been very very unimpressed The Dyson is very expensive, at least comparatively, and I hummed and hawed for ages before buying it - in the end bough a reconditioned one from Dyson through ebay which saved about £50 It's great because it works - even gets up cat hair. In fact I do most of my hoovering with it now (too lazy to get the big dyson from under the stairs!) I'd definitely buy it again and would even say it's worth the full price
quickcluck
We have this one http://www.betterware.co.uk/cyclonic-vacuum.html It's fabulous and really strong suck!
Looney
Thanks I think one of my dilemmas is whether to go for a plug in one or a rechargeable Is the battery life on a cordless one enough or annoying to keep recharging? And deciding where it would be stored. I have an upright Dyson which is years old and we've never had any problems with it but it lives in the airing cupboard upstairs and I can't be bothered to keep bringing it downstairs to have a quick hoover round (I know, I know, it's a tough life ). merlina
the dyson is rechargeable (don't think it comes in corded version) It lasts (I think) 6 minutes on a full charge on max suction (I don't use anything else); longer on half power That sounds very short but is plenty long enough for quick clean ups - I can pretty much do all the mucky bits downstairs in that time The battery seems to be holding up well - have had this about 14 months I currently seem to store mine under the sofa
chickencam
I would recommend buying a Dyson, the dustbuster types are useless and the batteries wear out really quickly and they have no suction power.
quickcluck
I also have a good old fashioned carpet sweeper which is fab! http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8550954/Trail/searchtext%3ECARPET+SWEEPER.htm
stu
I have bought... and broken all but the Dyson DCS Animal. Yes, it was expensive, but the way it is lasting, I reckon I'll save money in the long run. It's used every day... lasts 10 mins on 'normal'... 6 mins of full, and even 6 mins os a long time. It empties with a single button straight into the bin, has an everlasting tap-washable filter, and has a brilliant beater foot that sucks up animal hair no bother at all... Get it... You won't regret it.
Looney
My mum and dad have a carpet sweeper, I remember using it when I was little They're great things, I had to laugh when I saw them being advertised recently as 'eco cleaners' as if they'd just been invented! I'll have another look at Dysons and see if I can get a decent deal....might be a tad outside of my budget....

I recommend hanging around ebay, including the Dyson shop on there - you should be able to pick up a deal - especially if you can bide your time
CatieB
Dyson for me too. We have the original hand held rechargeable one and it has been well worth the money. As well as using it all the time around the house (including for ash from our Rayburn so it really does get max useage and is over 5 years old) we take it to our caravan when we go away. This week I had the liberty to go away on my own in the caravan and took it with me. DH rang me mid week and commented that he was missing the hoover, he didnt mention me We love it so much that I am now going to buy a new one with the long thingy so I can do my stairs easily. Its the DC35, yes a luxury I know but in my world anything too make cleaning easy is an essential. My old one can then stay in the caravan. craftyhunnypie
I wa sin currys the other day & they had this cute looking thingy hand held vac. Think it was called an orb. It looked very funky & I picked it up. But I couldn't work out how it hoovered. The dysons look funky too. I'd really like a Hetty hoover. I like it because it is pink & has big eyes! Looney
My SIL recently got a Henry vacuum cleaner and loves it to bits! She was over the moon when she got it, apparently she's wanted one since she was little
Bramble
Hello! I'm just hijacking your thread Looney, sorry! But thought that would be better than starting a new one! Just wondering if everyone still thinks Dyson is the way to go and if so, which one (the choice, just within Dyson seems mind boggling ) I'd like one with the long attachment thing so I can use it for stairs etc - but am struggling to justify the cost - not cheap, are they? I am TRULY hopeless at housework, but am trying to tell myself that I might be more inclined to hoover if I don't have to faff about with cables etc Also just wondered, how long they take to charge and is the suction anywhere near as good as a normal Dyson? I have this New Year Resolution planned to use my proposed Dyson to hoover for a full battery charge each day, then it won't get so bad - am I mad? merlina
I am the world's most slovenly 'housekeeper' but my baby Dyson does make a difference. It's so easy to use - but you (OK, I!) have to leave it where I can see it so I remember to use it Suction isn't quite as good as the full size model - but probably better than my 'city' dyson. It's a million times better than every other handheld, including the previous handheld Dyson which I wasn't impressed with I have the long attachment - fabulous for a short person dealing with spiders' webs I got mine at a discount on the Dyson ebay shop - I also baulked at the price. But knowing what I know now would definitely say it's worth it
Bramble
Thank you Merlina! I won't argue over your claim to be the world's most slovenly housekeeper, but I suspect that title applies to me too (I say it's 'cos I live alone and don't need to make a big deal out of housework, but the truth is, I'm just lazy ) My plan is to keep Dyson jnr where I will have to fall over it if I don't pick it up and use it - sounds like a good plan, but don't know if it will work - just don't know how everyone else manages to have such an immaculate home and mine is such a dump - how much mess can one person (and a dog) make? Will keep an eye on the Dyson ebay outlet, there's one on there at the moment (or there was a short while ago), but that didn't have the long attachment thingy ... merlina
heh - I live alone too (well, with cat - I blame most of the mess on him, but not sure how he managed to get a pile of my shoes in the middle of the living room ) Sometimes you can get a better deal by buying the components, like the long attachment, separately - there seems to be a huge mark-up when they're part of the 'Dyson package' - again have a good rummage thro ebay (check out the Dyson website first for product codes etc to make sure you get the right ones)
CatieB
See my comments above. I love dyson hand held hovers. I waited to by my new one with the long thingy until tesco had a double up voucher offer. I used my club card vouchers and paid for the whole thing with them. Fab for the stairs and yes we tend to a bit at a time. Stairs one day, mats another etc.
