theherd123
I am growing quite a lot of fruit & veg this year but have a few problems with some of them. I am growing organically and so dont want to use any chemicals. Your help would be much appreciated I appear to have white fly on my strawberries and i keep wiping them off but they keep coming back - how do i get rid of them? My sugarsnap peas have gone over and now have peas in the pods - can these still be eaten? The leaves on my beetroot have gone a funny brown colour but the bulb of the beetroot looks ok - is this right? My spuds (Maris Piper & Charlotte) still have not flowered so what have i done wrong? Guest
I can't offer a lot of advice Em only just starting myself. I am growing Charlottes and have had a really good crop so far, but I'm not sure they have flowers on them ?. I'll double check and let you know. I just felt around under the soil and picked some of the biggest. I think my beetroot has got brown leaves now, I think it just needs picking. I pickled some a few weeks ago and we have had some raw with salad and it was lovely Strawberries; not sure I haven't had any this year, I think it's too wet and I think my plants may need replacing they are a couple of years old
Trish
I seem to be growing slugs and only slugs this year. Almost everything has been consumed and that's using nematodes and slug pubs. Slugs
Martin B
There are lots of flowers on my charlottes.
ali-s
I didn't get any flowers on my Charlottes They were from the same bag as Martin's The leaves went brown and died back. I just feel about in the compost and take as many potatoes as I need Can't help with the Beetroot, mine are non exsistant. My Peas are like Mange Tout the Strawberries are doing all right. I planted up little pots of French Marigold and put them near my Veggie containers. The White Fly will eat the Marigolds before they attack the fruit and vegetables. ubereglu
To stop your plants being eaten by slugs we found out that if you put oats/bran around the plant stems and leaves that drag on the ground the slugs won't eat them. However you do need to replace them occasionally, as they go mouldy! Apart from that it works really well.
Guest
For white fly and black fly you could try spraying the plant with soapy water - just a washing up liquid mixture. This has worked well on roses. Just keep at it!
Guest
Yes - soapy water works well - the cheapest brand the better. Slugs don't like rhubarb. If you have a plant, lay the leaves around anything 'precious' and they keep away. If you are planting runner or climbing or dwarf beans or plants, pop a little slice of rhubarb down each hole. (half an inch or so will do it). Used coffee grounds (free from Starbucks) deter the slugs too. Chickens - lurve slugs but won't eat the big slimy fat juicy orange coloured ones. - shudder-
