Infra red lamp, dull emitter or electric hen?

Recommended Posts

I like dull emitters as you get a better view of the chicks, they adjust to day and night and the ceramic bulbs fail less than the infra red ones, some last years and years. The safest way to use these is with a proper ceramic bulb holder (available very cheaply from ebay)

The electric hen is said to be better for chicks though and apparently makes them feather up quicker, I think in reality it probably does but only a bit

Infra red is my last choice

So...either of the first two is your best bet

The dull emitter provides heat but not light so the chicks get the warmth they need but they also benefit from the natural cycle of the day and night.

My preference is also for a dull emitter as I find it reliable and easy to use, and its very easy for me to see what the chicks are up to. Most importantly I think it gives the chicks a more natural environment (as far as they can be natural living indoors right at the start in a plastic box!) I have read many good things about electric hens but I am slightly put off by the amount of fiddling to raise the legs although I think you can also suspend them which would suit me better.
