Burford Browns

Recommended Posts

Hi,

we bought a POL Burford about 2 months ago, from Newland Poultry in Malvern. Compared to our GNR and PP she seems a little bit limited in the brain department but she is affectionate and doesn't mind (too much) being handled.

We have found her to be a bit more flighty than other hybrids (not sure if they are pure breed or hybrid). She has lovely colouring with an almost golden head with a black with a hint of green body. She has started to lay and her eggs are very very tasty, I would say better than other hybrid eggs, which of course are already very tasty :)

When we chose Pippi some of her cohorts were almost totally black in colour whilst others were very similar to a Gingernut in colouring

Hope this helps.

Do you let your Burford girl free range much? I was going to buy a couple, then with no Burford Browns locally I decided against it. Would still like a couple for their eggs, YUM! but then I read somewhere, they are more suited to free ranging as much as possible. Would just be interested in what you think.

We hatched Burford Browns and Cotswold Legbars this year. We have 1 BB girl, she has started laying incredible dark brown eggs. I agree she is a little flightier than your warren types, but not as flighty as Legbar types.

She has a gorgeous green sheen to her feathers and is a sociable and friendly girl :D

I'd recommend them as a breed with my experience so far. She is also laying very well too.

Thanks Spacechick. We have a legbar hybrid, a skyline who is more flighty than the other girls. So, I think in due course I will get a couple of Burford Brown girls. Now just have to find someone who sells them....I know the chap from Legbars of Broadway was looking to get someone in the Home Counties to sell them for him, will have a look into for next Spring when I will be chicken shopping again. :D Does anyone know where else you can buy them from?

We got two from Burford Garden Centre today who sell the Legbars pullets, one was black with green sheen, the other is more browny with feathery feet so we can tell them apart. They also have them at Newland Grange Poultry. They are more expensive so we'll see if they are worth it. The Old Legbars they had there looked nice too quite pale mix of colours quite different to our Columbine they've also started selled light Sussex too.
