Snowy
They are growing so fast! They look like mini chickens now, but still cheap. Even Bolt - he is trying his crow but it is just a high pitched squeak at the moment What is this evil thing Mother? Looks scary! Oh children, it is marrow! Good eatings! Still not sure about this Mother: Ooh you know she's right? It is tasty: Today I was pootling in the garden so decided to let Lulu and babies out and try putting Ping back in with them. She just wanted to nick their food: While Lulu taught the babies about grass and bugs and dustbathing: Look over here children: This is how it's done dear, bottoms up! Lulu also showed them how to dustbathe in the flower beds, but I missed that photo opportunity! Unfortunately Ping is the grumpiest little Pekin I know and when they went back to their run she wouldn't let them in. So she was put back into solitary. Give him his due, Bolt stood up to her - when he is fully grown I think he will be a good little peacekeeper! But poor Mo and Jess, and even Lulu couldn't stand up to the Wrath of Ping. I am in the process of uploading a video of them - but it's taking a while! I'll post it when it's done. Hopefully this will work - just click on the image to play video
zakjon-98
Love the noises they are making Are you keeping the wyandotte boy?
Snowy
Yes he is a keeper! We were very lucky in that only the three hatched, 2 girls and 1 boy - I always planned on trying to keep one boy if I could, so we were saved from having to make any difficult decisions (although the lovely lady that I got the wyandotte eggs from did say she would have the boys back). zakjon-98
He is lovely Will you not be tempted to hatch some home grown eggs next year?...
Snowy
The thought hadn't even crossed my mind! (I wonder what I'd get - wyankins or pekindottes?)
good_egg
Lovely! Bolt looks like a proper wee character - so jealous you get to keep a boy. Loving the chicks too. Life dreams - hatch chooks, have rooster, oh and win lottery! Congrats!
Snowy
I caught him trying to hide under Mum today - I don't think he's realised he doesn't fit under her skirts any more!

stacey30
They are so lovely I have some pekin chicks who are 7 weeks, I notice Bolt is much bigger than the girls is this always the case with cockerels? My 3 are all the same size with quite yellow/pink combs, out of 13 eggs that we've naturally hatched I can't believe it would 3 girls! Snowy
Bolt is a bantam Wyandotte and although they are mini versions of large fowl wyandotte, they are still quite a bit bigger than pekins. At least I think he's a bantie He was supposed to be a silver barred wyandotte bantam, but ended up gold laced, so who knows, he might actually be a large fowl as well! He is only 9 weeks so he does have a lot of growing left to do. He is surprisingly chunky as well - when you handle the pekins, it's obvious they are all fluff, they are so light and delicate. He is solid and quite heavy for his size. But then wyandottes are meant to be multipurpose birds - originally bred for meat and eggs. Purplemaniacs
My gold laced and silver barred wyandottes are bantams and they are quite chunky too, they are both girls one the silver one has started to lay in the last couple of weeks. They hatched at Easter. My boy Tumble is much smaller being a Mini Silkie but he seems happy with them and the two Welsummer banties. Redwing
Well Bolt is turning in to a stunner - he has turned in to a lovely blue laced Wyandotte Wyandotte bantams are chunkier and taller than Pekins Pekin x Wyandotte would give you some smashing little broodies

Snowy
Thinking about it, he must have had a silver barred mother and a gold laced father, as the egg came from the barred dottes. Chicken genetics is fascinating!
superkitty
Lovely! When do they stop peeping? SO cute
Redwing
Thinking about it, he must have had a silver barred mother and a gold laced father, as the egg came from the barred dottes. Chicken genetics is fascinating! The barred and GLW were never mixed and such a cross would not result in beautiful blue laced he will be from gold to gold breeding - if GLW have any bluelaced in their make-up you'll get Gl, Blue laced and buff laced chicks
Snowy
So he is a mutant! Thanks Tasha - thats interesting! But I'm sure I remember you saying you hadn't had any GLWs for a couple of weeks - just how long had his egg been hanging around before I got it? And it still hatched! Thats the really amazing thing! Redwing
Goodness knows! I maintain that I only collected barred eggs. I still have no idea what happened
