chooks all wrapped up for the winter....

Recommended Posts

My new tarps came a little while ago, and as the OH goes back out to the gulf tomorrow . I persuaded him to give me a hand to put the tarps up....last year i did them in a nasty storm with awful gales due along with snow  ....Not this year i am prepared this time :D

Just need to find a cover for the door to the WIR and they are out of the weather till spring .

I have to say they do not seem to be of the same quality of previous years. Clear glass tarps from tarpaflex.....the winter will test them so will have to wait and see how they do.

The girls are moulting and are looking worse for wear atm till all the new growth comes through...but they are out of the wind now.....

Once the heat has gone out of the sun, my lot are going in the polytunnel. I have taken off both the doors to allow a free flow of air and I am going to surround the tunnel with my electric netting ... Its going to give me peace of mind too, knowing they are out of the cold winds and rain :D ... The netting is a lot bigger than the tunnel, so they will still have an outside area, and im hoping they will choose to go inside rather than outside

Yesterday I picked them up one by one and put them in the tunnel .. They were really worried, and stayed glued to the spot, so today im going to take a chair in there and sit with them for a while to give them some reassurance.

Good for you Angie!

My clear tarps have stayed on all year; the run is in the semi-shade and I just add a opaque tarp when they need any shade. We've had so much rain that it hasn't been worth taking them off.

I used to have the glass clear ones, but a couple of years back I got the reinforced ones that have the webbing through them, they seem to be built of sterner stuff.

Where did you get those from DG ? It might be worth looking into those.

I use green house netting for shade...hahaha ...when we get sunshine , a pretty poor year this time, i haven't taken that down , it lives underneath the tarps on the weld mesh year round .i have considered putting up some perspex but i'd need quite a lot for the WIR , it might be considered for next year. I will give almost anything a go to try and shelter the girlies through winter....and the tarps do keep the inside temp just a bit higher than outside.

I have a couple of acrylic panels on the sides of my wooden ark run. They have stayed on all summer due to the rubbish weather. I just need a couple of tarps for the other run so that they are both weather proofed and there is plenty of space for all the chookies to get out of the rain/snow/cold. 7 hens under one ark would be too much of a squash methinks. I will go and have a look now on ebay!
