Egg Custard fail

Big family dinner at mine yesterday and one of my nephews decided he would make proper egg custard for pudding. He has cooked in the past in pub restaurants. Anyway he insisted on whisking custard by hand, wasn't heating it enough, then over heated so it separated. Finally he blended it up we poured it through a sieve into a cold jug and it separated again so hardly anyone ate it :roll:

 

When I went to clear up my OH called me over to look in a big plastic bowl. In it were about a doz egg shells and egg whites all chucked in together. He'd not bothered separating the eggs properly and putting the whites aside. He'd also got some bits of yolk in there so there was no salvaging it :(

 

We're both really quite cross, the hens aren't laying very many eggs at the moment and that was a dozen good eggs wasted :evil: Bit of an insight into the waste that probably goes on in commercial kitchens. :shock:
