Willow
We've had our wood burning stove a couple of years now and use it a lot in the winter, we have double doors to the living room so open these and without the heating on it heats much of downstairs if it's not too colc. We're also lucky enough to have lots of wood in the garden still. The house chimney is a double chimney as originally there was a coal fired boiler in the hall (long since blocked off). It would be expensive but I'm wondering about getting an inset wood burning stove with back boiler fitted into the hall side of the chimney stack to heat water and radiators. I have quite a large house with 16 (I think) radiators Just wondered if anyone had anything similar This is a long term idea so if i go ahead it will be done in the summer for next year. Gertie
Hi I'm not sure if we have the back boiler part, but we have a multifuel stove. It heats 5 radiators and a tank of water. We are just about to have a totally new system attached to it as the old one was antiquated & broke down when electricians switched off power to the electric pump. It's going to cost £3600 to install 6 new radiators, pump & tank. It seems to work fine. The only drawback is having to manually lump coal about, feed the stove & empty the ash once a day. We only have a 2 bed cottage but it keeps it warm. We have no gas.
chickencam
My parents had two when I was growing up. The first one didn't have enough umph to run the radiators, but the second one worked well. You do have to plan your hot water usage a lot more in advance and it takes much longer to get a tank of hot water for a bath, but if you have the space and the fuel could be an option worth considering, but you will need to check carefully the output of the stove and what is needed to run all of the radiators. Willow
I'd leave the heating and water attached to the gas boiler as well so that we weren't dependent on the stove. The wood burner would be to supplement it.
