The Dogmother
I am trying to hunt down some marrons glace for a recipe I'm doing for Christmas, but they are proving illusive (and expensive!). I have found that Lakeland stocks them, so that's an option to get them next weekend when I'm in Stratford, but does anyone know where I can find them elsewhere/cheaper? Charlottechicken
Would Waitrose do them at this time of year? Otherwise I would imagine somewhere like House of Fraser, Selfridges or John Lewis? Maybe Amazon or Ebay online? Let us know when you find some reasonably priced, I'd love to try one!

The Dogmother
Thanks CC, tried all the usual supermarket options with no luck. quickcluck, the search was the first thing I did... I was wondering if any Omleteers had any personal advice; perhaps I should have specified that.

Bramble
John Lewis definitely had them last year (but they were flippin' expense, so probably no cheaper than Lakeland) - if you are aiming for lakeland I'd call them and ask them to put some aside for you, they're usually happy to do that as they do have a tendency to sell out of stuff sometimes! The Dogmother
Thanks for the tip Bramble, will do.
Charlottechicken
I just had a look on the Lakeland site and it says they are discontinued They are also really, really expensive maybe we ought to have a 'make your own marrons glace' thread for next Christmas Edited to add: I've got loads of uncooked chestnuts in the kitchen, and have found several marrons glace recipes online so am going to attempt my own now! The Dogmother
Do let me know how you get on Claire. I may have to look elsewhere if they are discontinued at Lakeland.
Charlottechicken
My chestnuts are old and have gone hard Will have to buy some more and check out a recipe.
Lesley
I've never found any reasonably priced ones - I either buy them in France or, usually, make my own. I'm not very good at keeping them whole though, they always break up a bit. They only take a week......a few minutes each day, but it depends when you need them by? The Dogmother
I wanted them for a dessert I am making on Christmas day, but don't really have the time to faff around with making them. I'll have a look in Stratford on Saturday if you can think of a deli there Lesley.
Lesley
I don't know if we've got one anymore - I wonder if the cheese shop might have some....although they would be expensive in there.
Sheilaz
Oh, I saw some in a local shop today but didn't see price. Probably not cheap judging by the other things I bought (for presents). They were in a wonderful Italian deli in this town DM, I mention in case you ever pass through this way. Or, in case it prompts some other thoughts about a local deli. They don't have an online shop, but its Buongiornoitalia. Love the sound of a recipe requiring marron glacé. Hope you find some.
The Dogmother
Thanks Sheila, that reminds me that we have an Italian wholesaler near here, I may have to pay them a visit!
Sheilaz
Thanks Sheila, that reminds me that we have an Italian wholesaler near here, I may have to pay them a visit! Leonardo Felice perhaps? Oh, I'm so hungry now, I'm trying not to eat the gifts I bought, I love Italian food!
The Dogmother
Yes, do you know them? I'll give them a ring tomorrow and ask if they stock them. Now why didn't I think of that?! TBH I have been avoiding going there as it always costs me a fortune and they press all sorts of free goodies on me
